Kragujevac

Kragujevac is the fourth-largest city in Serbia and the administrative center of the Šumadija District, located in the heart of the country approximately 140 kilometers south of Belgrade. Nestled in a fertile valley along the Lepenica River, the city is surrounded by gentle, forested hills that give the broader Šumadija region its characteristic landscape. Its central position makes it a natural crossroads of Serbian geography and culture.

With a population of around 150,000 people, Kragujevac is a significant urban and industrial hub in central Serbia. The city played a pivotal role in the formation of the modern Serbian state and continues to be an important center of manufacturing, education, and cultural life.

Kragujevac holds a distinguished place in Serbian history as the country's first capital in the modern era. From 1818 to 1841, under the reign of Prince Miloš Obrenović, it served as the seat of the Serbian government, the location of the first Serbian parliament, and the site where the first Serbian constitution was adopted in 1835. This constitutional milestone, though short-lived, marked a defining moment in the nation's path toward sovereignty and democratic governance.

Among the city's most significant sites is the Šumarice Memorial Park, created in memory of the victims of the October 1941 massacre in which German occupying forces executed approximately 7,000 civilians, including schoolchildren and their teachers. The park, which hosts the October Festival each year, is one of Serbia's most solemn and moving commemorative spaces. The National Museum of Kragujevac and the Old Royal Compound also offer important insights into the city's royal and political heritage.

Kragujevac has a lively cultural scene supported by the Knjaževsko-srpski teatar, one of the oldest theaters in the Balkans, founded in 1835. The city hosts numerous arts festivals, literary events, and public celebrations throughout the year. A vibrant café culture and a young population, partly owing to the university, give the city a dynamic social atmosphere.

The city is well connected by road and rail to Belgrade and other Serbian cities. The E761 highway and regular train and bus services make Kragujevac easily accessible. Its location in the center of the country means that several other notable Serbian destinations can be reached within a few hours.

Kragujevac is home to the University of Kragujevac, founded in 1976, which has grown into one of Serbia's most respected higher education institutions with faculties spanning medicine, engineering, economics, and the arts. The university significantly shapes the city's intellectual and demographic character.

The city's economy is anchored by the Zastava automobile plant, which has produced vehicles under various brand partnerships for decades and remains one of the largest employers in the region. Kragujevac combines industrial heritage with a warm, welcoming community spirit, making it an authentic and rewarding destination for visitors seeking to understand Serbia beyond its capital.
