Kryvyy Rih

Kryvyy Rih, also spelled Kryvyi Rih or Krivoy Rog in Russian, is a major industrial city located in central Ukraine in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Situated along the Inhulets River and its tributaries, the city stretches over an extraordinary linear distance of approximately 126 kilometers from north to south, making it one of the longest cities in the world by geographic extent. With a population of approximately 600,000 people, it is one of Ukraine's largest cities and has been central to the country's industrial identity for over a century.

The name Kryvyy Rih means "crooked horn" in Ukrainian, likely referring to the curved shape of the peninsula formed by the confluence of the Inhulets and Saksahan rivers where the original settlement was established. The modern city's development began in the 1880s with the discovery and exploitation of one of the world's largest iron ore deposits beneath and around the city. The Krivbas iron ore basin, centered on Kryvyy Rih, is one of the most productive iron ore mining regions in Europe and one of the most significant in the world. This extraordinary natural resource has driven the city's economic identity and global importance for well over a century.

During the Soviet era, Kryvyy Rih was developed into one of the USSR's most important metallurgical and mining centers. Enormous open-pit mines, underground mines, ore processing facilities, and steel plants were constructed, transforming the landscape and attracting workers from across the Soviet Union. The Kryvorizhstal steel plant, one of the largest in the former Soviet Union, was at the center of a controversial privatization and renationalization drama in the early 2000s and is now owned by ArcelorMittal, one of the world's largest steel companies.

Kryvyy Rih is notable globally as the birthplace of Volodymyr Zelensky, who served as a comedian and actor before being elected President of Ukraine in 2019. Zelensky's rise to global prominence, especially following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has placed Kryvyy Rih under an international spotlight. The city has itself been affected by the ongoing conflict, with missile and drone strikes causing damage and casualties in the city and its surrounding region.

The city has a range of educational and cultural institutions, including Kryvyi Rih National University and several specialized mining and metallurgical colleges. The Kryvyi Rih Historical and Local Lore Museum and various theaters and cultural centers contribute to the city's cultural life. Despite its primarily industrial character, the city has parks, botanical gardens, and recreational areas that provide green spaces for its residents.

Kryvyy Rih is connected to other major Ukrainian cities via rail and road networks. The city's economy remains deeply tied to iron ore mining and steel production, though efforts have been made to diversify. The ongoing conflict with Russia has severely impacted the economy and has displaced many residents, but the city's working population has shown extraordinary resilience in continuing to function under wartime conditions.

Kryvyy Rih stands as a testament to the industrial might and enduring resilience of Ukraine. Its remarkable iron ore deposits, its industrial heritage, and its recent role at the center of world events through the presidency of its most famous son make it one of the most significant cities in contemporary Ukrainian history.
