Kumamoto is a major city and the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture, located in the central part of Kyushu island, Japan. With a population of approximately 740,000, it is one of the largest cities in Kyushu and serves as an important administrative, commercial, and cultural center for the region. Situated on the fertile Kumamoto Plain near the active Mount Aso volcano complex, the city enjoys a mild climate and scenic natural surroundings.

Kumamoto is famous throughout Japan for its distinctive cuisine, including Kumamoto ramen, basashi (horse sashimi), and karashi renkon (lotus root stuffed with mustard miso). The city's beloved mascot, Kumamon — a round black bear character — has become one of Japan's most recognized and beloved regional mascots, generating significant economic value and tourism interest.

The city is well connected by the Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train, which provides fast links to Fukuoka and Kagoshima. Regular ferry services connect Kumamoto to the Shimabara Peninsula across Ariake Bay.
