Kurgan

Kurgan lies in the south of western Siberia, on the left bank of the Tobol River, roughly two thousand kilometres east of Moscow and close to the border with Kazakhstan. The landscape is forest-steppe, an open country of birch groves, wheat fields and shallow lakes that stretches to the horizon in every direction. Winters are long and severe, summers short and warm, and the spring flood of the Tobol is a regular event in local life.

Around three hundred thousand people live in the city, which is the capital of Kurgan Oblast. Its significance is agricultural and industrial. The region is one of the main grain-growing areas of the Trans-Urals, and the city produces buses, agricultural machinery, tracked military vehicles, pumps and medical equipment, alongside food processing plants that handle the surrounding harvest.

The settlement was founded in 1679 as a Russian frontier post called Tsarevo Gorodishche, protecting farmers advancing into Siberia. It was renamed in 1782 after the ancient burial mound, a kurgan, that stood nearby, and grew as a market town on the route east. In the nineteenth century Kurgan received a series of exiled Decembrists, the aristocratic officers who attempted a revolt against Nicholas I in 1825, and several of their carefully preserved wooden houses are now museums that give an unusually vivid picture of provincial exile. The Trans-Siberian Railway arrived in the 1890s and transformed the town into a shipping point for Siberian butter and grain, and the evacuation of factories from western Russia during the Second World War made it an industrial centre.

Kurgan's greatest claim to international attention is medical. The surgeon Gavriil Ilizarov, working here from the 1950s, invented an external fixation apparatus of rings and wires that allowed broken and deformed bones to be lengthened and healed in ways previously thought impossible. His method spread worldwide, and the research centre he founded in Kurgan remains a leading orthopaedic institution, treating patients from many countries and giving this modest Siberian city a genuinely global reputation.

Visitors find a green, low-rise city with a long riverside embankment, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a regional museum covering Siberian archaeology and natural history, an aviation museum with aircraft displayed outdoors, and the Decembrist house museums. The surrounding oblast has mineral springs and lakes with salt and mud used in sanatoria, and forests popular for mushroom and berry picking.

Everyday life is unhurried. Winter brings ice fishing, skiing and hockey, summer brings dachas, river bathing and open-air markets. Local specialities include Siberian dumplings, freshwater fish, and honey and dairy products from the surrounding farms.

The Trans-Siberian Railway gives direct trains to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Omsk and beyond, an airport offers flights to the capital, and buses and trolleybuses serve the city. Kurgan State University, an agricultural academy and several colleges provide higher education.

Kurgan is a working Siberian city of frontier origins, remembered by travellers for its wooden architecture, wide river and remarkable contribution to medicine.
