Kuşadası
Kuşadası is a coastal town and district in Aydın Province on the Aegean coast of Turkey, situated on a bay of the Aegean Sea about 90 kilometers south of İzmir. A major cruise ship port and popular beach resort, Kuşadası is best known internationally as the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus — one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world — and to the nearby archaeological and pilgrimage sites of the region. Its name means Bird Island, referring to the small island connected to the town by a causeway, upon which a Byzantine and Ottoman fortification (the Pigeon Castle or Güvercin Adası) stands.
With a year-round population of approximately 70,000, Kuşadası receives a very large number of visitors during summer, particularly cruise passengers who arrive in the harbor and depart on excursions to Ephesus. The town has developed a substantial tourist infrastructure of hotels, restaurants, and a Grand Bazaar-style shopping district catering to cruise passengers seeking leather goods, carpets, jewelry, and Turkish ceramics. Despite this commercial orientation, the town maintains a pleasant waterfront and a local character in its older residential neighborhoods away from the cruise terminal area.
The ancient city of Ephesus, approximately 18 kilometers inland, is the primary reason most visitors come to Kuşadası. One of the largest and most important cities of the Roman Empire, Ephesus was a prosperous port city of up to 250,000 inhabitants during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The extensive ruins include the Library of Celsus (one of the largest libraries in the ancient world), the Great Theatre (capable of seating 24,000 spectators), the Agora, the Temple of Hadrian, marble-paved colonnaded streets, and remarkable terrace houses with intact mosaic floors and wall paintings. Ephesus is also the location of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, though only a single column remains.
The House of the Virgin Mary (Meryemana), located on a hill above Ephesus, is an important Christian pilgrimage site believed by many to be the place where Mary spent her last years, accompanied by the Apostle John. The site was identified in the early 19th century following visions described by the German mystic Anne Catherine Emmerich and has since been visited by several popes. The Basilica of Saint John in nearby Selçuk, built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian over the tomb of the Apostle John, and the İsa Bey Mosque (one of the finest examples of early Anatolian Turkish architecture) complete an extraordinary concentration of religious heritage.
The national park of Dilek Peninsula Büyük Menderes Delta, about 30 kilometers south of Kuşadası, protects unspoiled Aegean coastal scenery, including several pristine pebble beaches accessible only to limited numbers of visitors and important wildlife habitat. The thermal springs of Pamukkale, famous for their terraced white travertine pools, are accessible as a day trip about 200 kilometers inland.
The nearest airport is İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (about 90 kilometers north), one of Turkey's major international airports. Ferries connect Kuşadası to the Greek island of Samos during summer. Buses and dolmuş minibuses connect the town to Selçuk and Ephesus.
Kuşadası is a city whose significance rests almost entirely on what surrounds it — and what surrounds it is extraordinary, making it one of the most historically and culturally rich tourism bases in the Mediterranean world.
