Kwai Chung
Kwai Chung is a large urban area in the New Territories of Hong Kong, forming the greater part of the Kwai Tsing District. It lies on the western side of the Kowloon peninsula's hinterland, between the hills of Tai Mo Shan to the north and the sheltered waters of Rambler Channel to the west, facing the island of Tsing Yi. Once a scattering of farming and fishing villages set among hills and streams, it is today one of the most intensively developed parts of the territory.
Roughly a quarter of a million people live in Kwai Chung, housed largely in high-rise public and subsidised estates that climb the slopes in dense clusters. The area's global significance, however, comes from its waterfront. The Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, spread along Rambler Channel, form one of the busiest container ports in the world, handling many millions of standard containers each year. The cranes, stacked boxes and constant movement of trucks are the defining image of the district and a reminder of Hong Kong's role as a trading hub between China and the world.
The transformation began in the 1960s and 1970s, when the colonial government designated Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung as one of Hong Kong's first new towns. Villages and farmland gave way to factories producing textiles, plastics and electronics, and to housing for the workers who filled them. When manufacturing moved across the border into Guangdong from the 1980s onwards, many industrial buildings were converted into warehouses, offices, studios and showrooms, and the port grew to become the district's economic anchor.
Kwai Chung is not a conventional sightseeing destination, but it rewards curious visitors. Container Terminal viewing points and the bridges to Tsing Yi offer dramatic industrial panoramas, especially at night. The Metroplaza and Kwai Chung Plaza shopping centres are busy local landmarks, the latter known for inexpensive fashion and street food popular with young people. Traditional life survives in the Kwai Chung Hospital area's older lanes and in temples such as Tin Hau shrines that once served fishing communities, while the annual Tai Ping Ching Chiu festivals in nearby villages preserve older customs.
Daily culture here is quintessentially local Hong Kong. Wet markets, cooked food centres, tea restaurants serving milk tea and pineapple buns, and estate playgrounds full of children after school define the atmosphere. The district has also become a centre for the arts in unexpected ways, as converted industrial buildings house dance studios, small theatres and creative businesses priced out of the city centre.
Transport is excellent. The MTR Tsuen Wan line serves Kwai Fong, Kwai Hing and Lai King stations, connecting to Central in about twenty minutes, and Lai King offers interchange with the Tung Chung line and the airport express corridor. Major expressways link the container port to mainland China. Numerous secondary schools, vocational training institutes and the nearby campuses of Hong Kong's universities serve local students.
Kwai Chung matters because it keeps Hong Kong working, combining one of the world's great ports with the everyday life of a densely packed residential community.
