Kyengera
Kyengera is a town in Wakiso District in central Uganda, lying about eleven kilometres southwest of the centre of Kampala on the main highway towards Masaka and the Tanzanian border. It stands on the rolling hills of the Buganda plateau at around twelve hundred metres above sea level, a landscape of red earth, banana gardens and eucalyptus stands that has been rapidly built over as the capital expands. The equatorial climate is warm and pleasant all year thanks to the altitude, with two rainy seasons and abundant sunshine between them.
Kyengera has grown extremely quickly and now has a population well into the hundreds of thousands, making it one of the largest urban settlements in Wakiso, itself the most populous district in Uganda. It functions as a dormitory and market town for Kampala, and its character is that of a busy, informal, fast changing place rather than a planned city.
The area lies at the heart of Buganda, the largest of Uganda's traditional kingdoms, and most residents are Baganda, though people from every part of the country and from neighbouring states have settled here. Luganda is the everyday language alongside English and Swahili, and the customs, clan structures and ceremonies of the kingdom remain an important part of social life.
The economy is built on trade and services. The roadside is lined with shops, hardware stores, furniture workshops, garages, markets and small food businesses, and thousands of residents commute daily into Kampala by minibus taxi or motorcycle. Poultry farming, horticulture and dairy production continue on the fringes, supplying the capital's markets, and light manufacturing and construction have grown steadily.
Kyengera itself has few formal tourist attractions, but it is exceptionally well placed for visiting the sights of central Uganda. The Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the kings of Buganda are buried beneath a great thatched dome, lie a short distance away, as do the Kabaka's palace at Mengo, the Kabaka's Lake and the Uganda Museum. Entebbe with its botanical gardens, wildlife education centre and the shore of Lake Victoria is around an hour to the south, and the Ssese Islands, Mabamba swamp with its shoebill storks and the Mpanga forest are all within easy reach.
Daily life is lively and sociable, centred on markets, churches and mosques, football, music and the busy street food trade selling rolex egg wraps, roasted maize, matoke and grilled meat.
Transport is dominated by the Kampala Masaka road, which carries heavy traffic and has been progressively widened, and by the network of shared taxis and boda boda motorcycles that reaches every neighbourhood. Entebbe International Airport is about forty kilometres away and is connected by an expressway.
Schools and vocational institutes serve the town, and Uganda's major universities, including Makerere, one of the oldest and most respected in Africa, are in Kampala nearby.
Kyengera is significant as an example of the rapid urban growth reshaping East Africa, and as a convenient and affordable base at the edge of Uganda's capital.
