Laiwu

Laiwu is a district-level city that was formerly an independent prefecture-level city before being merged into the municipality of Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, in January 2019. Located in the central-western part of Shandong in eastern China, Laiwu sits in a valley surrounded by mountains, with the Wenhe and Yingwen rivers flowing through its territory. With a population of approximately 1.4 million, Laiwu is an important industrial and agricultural area within the greater Jinan municipality.

The history of Laiwu area is ancient, with records indicating human settlement stretching back to the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history, over 2,500 years ago. The region was part of the ancient state of Qi and later Qi's rival, the state of Lu — the birthplace of Confucius. The mountains around Laiwu contain numerous historical relics, ancient inscriptions, and archaeological sites that reflect thousands of years of continuous habitation and cultural activity.

Laiwu was long known throughout China as an important steel production center, built around the Laiwu Iron and Steel Group, one of China's medium-sized steel enterprises that played an important role in the national steel industry. The industrial character of the city is balanced by the remarkable natural landscapes surrounding it. Fanggan Village in the Xueye Mountain area is one of Shandong's most beloved scenic destinations, famous for its plum and peach blossoms in spring, which transform the mountain valleys into a breathtaking sea of white and pink flowers. The annual blossom festival draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from across northern China.

The Qilu Mountain scenic area and the Yin Cliff site, featuring ancient cliff inscriptions and Buddhist carvings, offer additional cultural and natural attractions. The Pengshan Thermal Springs, known for their mineral-rich waters, have developed into a resort area. Traditional performances of Laiwu bangzi, a local variety of Shandong bangzi opera, represent the intangible cultural heritage of the area.

Laiwu produces significant quantities of ginger, a crop for which the region has been famous for centuries — Laiwu ginger is considered among the finest in China. The area also produces garlic and a range of vegetables that supply markets across northern China. Small and medium enterprises in food processing, building materials, and light manufacturing contribute to the local economy.

The merger with Jinan has improved Laiwu's transportation connections and economic development prospects. High-speed rail links now make it easy to reach central Jinan in under 30 minutes. With its ancient history, spectacular spring blossoms, industrial heritage, and agricultural traditions, Laiwu is a valuable component of Shandong's diverse cultural and economic landscape.
