Lal Bahadur Nagar

Lal Bahadur Nagar, known to almost everyone simply as LB Nagar, lies in the south-eastern part of Hyderabad in the Indian state of Telangana. Once a separate municipality in Ranga Reddy district, it was absorbed into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in 2007 and now forms one of the city's busiest suburban zones. The name honours Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second prime minister of India.

Around three hundred thousand people live in the area, and the wider corridor around it houses far more. LB Nagar owes its growth to geography. It sits where the highway towards Vijayawada and the coastal districts meets the ring of roads circling Hyderabad, which made it a natural place for families priced out of the older city to settle. What was farmland and rocky scrub within living memory is now a dense grid of apartment blocks, showrooms, hospitals and coaching institutes.

The suburb's modern history is short but rapid. Growth accelerated in the 1990s and 2000s as Hyderabad expanded into a national centre for information technology and pharmaceuticals, and LB Nagar became a favoured address for salaried households, government employees and small traders. The opening of the Hyderabad Metro in 2017, with the Red Line terminating at LB Nagar, confirmed its place as one of the anchors of the metropolitan area.

The best known landmark is the great multi-level junction at the heart of the suburb, where flyovers, the elevated metro viaduct and surface roads meet in a knot of constant movement. Nearby Saroornagar Lake, with its walking track, park and indoor stadium, offers a green counterpoint, and the Chintalkunta and Bandlaguda tanks preserve fragments of the old lake system that once irrigated these villages. Dilsukhnagar, a short distance west, is one of the city's liveliest shopping and cinema districts.

Life here reflects Hyderabad's blend of Telugu and Deccani cultures. Street food stalls sell biryani, mirchi bajji and irani chai; temples, mosques and churches stand within a few streets of one another; and festivals from Bonalu and Bathukamma to Ramzan and Christmas fill the calendar. Ramoji Film City, one of the largest studio complexes in the world, lies along the highway to the east and is easily reached from the suburb.

Transport is the area's defining strength. The metro, an enormous fleet of city buses, the Outer Ring Road and the Nagole suburban rail corridor connect residents to the old city, to the financial district and to the airport at Shamshabad. Numerous engineering, pharmacy and management colleges operate in and around the suburb, feeding students into Hyderabad's technology and healthcare industries.

Lal Bahadur Nagar is not a tourist destination in its own right, but it shows clearly how a modern Indian metropolis grows: a cluster of villages transformed within a generation into a busy, aspirational city district.
