Larkana
Larkana is a city located in the Sindh Province of Pakistan, in the lower Indus Valley, approximately 485 kilometers northeast of Karachi. Home to around 500,000 people, Larkana serves as the administrative headquarters of Larkana District and is one of the larger cities of Sindh. The city occupies a position of significance in both ancient history and modern Pakistani political life, sitting near the site of one of the world's oldest urban civilizations and serving as the ancestral home of one of Pakistan's most prominent political dynasties.
The most extraordinary historical distinction of the Larkana region is its proximity to Mohenjo-daro, one of the largest and best-preserved cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, located approximately 28 kilometers from the city center. Mohenjo-daro, meaning Mound of the Dead Men in Sindhi, was built around 2500 BC and at its peak housed an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 people. The site features remarkably advanced urban planning, including a sophisticated grid street layout, covered brick drains, multi-story buildings, a large public bath known as the Great Bath, and warehouses that speak to a highly organized and prosperous civilization. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, Mohenjo-daro draws archaeologists and tourists from around the world and is one of Pakistan's most important cultural assets.
Larkana is also famous as the ancestral home of the Bhutto family, one of the most powerful political dynasties in South Asian history. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who served as both Prime Minister and President of Pakistan before his controversial execution in 1979, was born in the Larkana region. His daughter Benazir Bhutto, who became the first female Prime Minister of a Muslim-majority country and was twice elected to that office, was also deeply associated with Larkana. The Bhutto family estate at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, near Larkana, contains the family mausoleum where Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and later Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007, are buried. The mausoleum is a significant political pilgrimage site for supporters of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
The economy of Larkana and its surrounding district is primarily agricultural, centered on the cultivation of rice, cotton, wheat, and sugarcane in the fertile Indus floodplain. The Indus River and its associated irrigation canal systems provide water for intensive farming across the region. Sugar mills and cotton ginning factories represent the main industrial activities tied to the agricultural sector. The city's markets are active centers of trade for agricultural commodities and consumer goods.
Larkana has several educational institutions including a medical college, Shah Abdul Latif University, and various schools that serve the educational needs of the city and district population. The Larkana railway station connects the city to the national rail network, and roads link it to Sukkur, Karachi, and other Sindh cities.
The city's cultural life reflects the rich traditions of Sindhi culture, including music, poetry, and Sufi religious devotion. Annual festivals and urs ceremonies at local shrines are important community events. Larkana's unique combination of ancient civilizational heritage, political history, and agricultural character make it a city of deep significance in understanding the history and contemporary life of Sindh and Pakistan.
