Lausanne
Lausanne is a city on the northern shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) in the canton of Vaud, in French-speaking Switzerland. Built on three hills descending to the lake, it is one of the most architecturally dramatic cities in Switzerland, known for its steep streets, its remarkably well-preserved Gothic cathedral, its concentration of international sporting organizations — including the International Olympic Committee — and one of the most beautiful lakeside settings in Europe.
With a population of approximately 145,000 in the city and over 420,000 in the broader agglomeration, Lausanne is Switzerland's fourth-largest city and the capital of the canton of Vaud. It is a significant center for education and research, home to the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), one of the world's leading technical universities and a major research institution, and the University of Lausanne (UNIL), giving the city a strongly international and academic character.
Lausanne has been associated with the Olympic movement since 1915 when Pierre de Coubertin moved the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee here. The Olympic Museum (Musée Olympique) on the Quai d'Ouchy is the world's largest documentation center for the Olympic Games, with extensive collections of objects, films, and interactive exhibits tracing the history of the modern Olympics. Several other major international sporting federations — FIFA, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and numerous Olympic sport governing bodies — are also headquartered in Lausanne, earning it the title of Olympic Capital.
The Notre-Dame Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece completed in the 13th century and one of the finest Gothic structures in Switzerland, crowns the city on its highest hill. It is one of the few remaining active Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals in Switzerland (most were converted to Protestant use in the Reformation). The Cathedral Quarter, connected to the city below by covered stairways, retains much of its medieval character. Lausanne is one of the last cities in Switzerland to maintain the tradition of the guet — a night watchman who calls out the hours from the cathedral tower every night.
The lakeside district of Ouchy is the city's most pleasant public space, with a long promenade, sailing clubs, and ferry connections to other Lake Geneva towns including Montreux, Geneva, and Évian-les-Bains in France. The Collection de l'Art Brut, a unique museum dedicated to art created by self-taught artists and psychiatric patients, is one of the most interesting and distinctive museums in Switzerland. The Mudac (Museum of Design and Contemporary Applied Arts) and the Elysée (Museum of Photography) complete a strong cultural offer in the lakeside area.
Lausanne is connected to Geneva by the Léman Express regional train (about 40 minutes) and by the main Swiss rail network. The CGN lake steamers (Compagnie Générale de Navigation) provide scenic connections to other Lake Geneva destinations. The city has a metro system (the first automated metro in Switzerland) linking the lakeside with the higher city districts.
Lausanne is a city of exceptional topographical drama and international distinction, offering a blend of Olympic history, Gothic architecture, cutting-edge research, and incomparable lakeside views.
