Leiden
Leiden is a historic city in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, situated on the Old Rhine River about 15 kilometers northeast of The Hague and 35 kilometers south of Amsterdam. Home to the Netherlands' oldest and most distinguished university, the birthplace of the painters Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Steen, and a city whose heroic resistance to Spanish siege in 1574 became a founding legend of the Dutch Republic, Leiden is a city of extraordinary historical significance and cultural richness.
With a population of approximately 125,000, Leiden is a mid-sized university city whose character is defined almost entirely by its academic institutions. Leiden University, founded in 1575 by William the Silent as a reward to the city for its resistance during the Spanish siege, is the oldest university in the Netherlands and one of the leading research universities in Europe. It has been the home institution of René Descartes, Baruch Spinoza (who studied here), Hugo Grotius, and numerous Nobel laureates including Albert Einstein during a visiting period. The presence of around 30,000 students gives the city an exceptionally lively and cosmopolitan character.
Leiden's historic center is a network of canals, almshouses (hofjes), historic bridges, and gabled houses that represent some of the finest surviving examples of 17th-century Dutch urban architecture. The Burcht van Leiden, a medieval motte-and-bailey fortification on an artificial hill at the confluence of two branches of the Rhine, offers panoramic views over the city's red-tiled rooftops and canals. The Pieterskerk, a Gothic church where the Pilgrim Fathers who later sailed to America on the Mayflower worshipped during their years in Leiden (1609–1620), is one of the city's most historically significant monuments.
Leiden has an exceptional collection of museums for its size. The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (National Museum of Antiquities) houses the most important collection of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman antiquities in the Netherlands, including the Temple of Taffeh, a complete Egyptian temple gifted by the Egyptian government. The Naturalis Biodiversity Center is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. The Museum De Lakenhal, which houses the city's fine arts collection, is devoted to Dutch Golden Age painting with important works including Leiden-born artists. The Hortus Botanicus Leiden, founded in 1590 and one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, contains remarkable collections of plants including the first tulips cultivated in the Netherlands.
The Pilgrim Fathers connection is an important part of Leiden's identity. The Leiden American Pilgrim Museum documents the years the Pilgrim Fathers spent in the city before departing for the New World in 1620, and the city maintains close ties with Plymouth, Massachusetts. Rembrandt van Rijn, born in Leiden in 1606, spent his early years and artistic formation in the city before moving to Amsterdam — the Rembrandt trail through Leiden traces locations associated with his early life.
Leiden is served by frequent intercity trains from Amsterdam (about 35 minutes), The Hague (about 15 minutes), and Rotterdam (about 30 minutes). The A44 motorway provides road access. The city center is highly bikeable and compact.
Leiden is a city of intellectual grandeur and human scale, offering one of the most rewarding and historically layered experiences of Dutch culture outside Amsterdam.
