Linfen
Linfen is a prefecture-level city located in the southern part of Shanxi Province in northern China, situated in the Fen River valley between the Luliang Mountains to the west and the Taihang Mountains to the east. With a population of approximately 4.5 million, Linfen is one of the larger cities in Shanxi and occupies a place of extraordinary historical significance in Chinese civilization — the area is widely believed to be the birthplace of the Chinese nation and is associated with the legendary origins of Chinese civilization.
Linfen's historical importance stems from its location in the Yao-Shun-Yu cultural zone, which refers to the legendary sage-kings of early Chinese civilization. The region is associated with Emperor Yao (Tangdi Yao), one of the mythological Five Emperors revered in Chinese tradition as founding figures of Chinese civilization. The Yao Temple (Yaomiao) in the city, originally constructed during the Tang Dynasty, is a major historical and cultural site dedicated to Emperor Yao and is considered one of the oldest state temples in China. Nearby, the Hukou Waterfall — China's largest yellow waterfall — is located in the Linfen area on the Yellow River, creating a dramatic display of turbulent ochre-colored water tumbling over a wide basalt escarpment.
The Hukou Waterfall, located where the Yellow River narrows dramatically between cliffs on the border of Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, is often called the second waterfall of China after Huangguoshu and presents one of China's most spectacular natural sights. During winter, ice formations around the waterfall create an otherworldly frozen landscape. In spring when mountain snow melts, the torrent is at its most powerful and the spray and sound are overwhelming.
Linfen has historically been one of China's major coal-producing cities, situated above some of the richest coal deposits in Shanxi Province, which contains a large proportion of China's coal reserves. The coal industry brought significant industrial development but also severe environmental pollution that, in the early 2000s, led to Linfen being identified as one of the most polluted cities in the world. Since then, the city and provincial government have invested heavily in environmental remediation, mine closures, and industrial upgrading, and the environmental situation has improved significantly.
The city's agricultural traditions are ancient, with the Fen River valley having been cultivated for millennia. Local products include various grains and the famous Fen Liquor (Fenjiu), one of China's historically most important baijiu varieties, produced in the region for over 4,000 years according to Chinese historical sources and now one of the most recognized Chinese spirits brands internationally.
Linfen is connected by rail and expressway to Taiyuan and other Shanxi cities, and high-speed rail has improved connections to Beijing and central China. With its extraordinary connection to the mythological origins of Chinese civilization, remarkable Hukou Waterfall, industrial heritage in transition, and ancient liquor tradition, Linfen is a city of deep significance in the story of China.
