Logan City

Logan City is a city in south-east Queensland, Australia, lying between Brisbane to the north and the Gold Coast to the south. It takes its name from the Logan River, which winds across its southern half through farmland and bushland before reaching Moreton Bay. The terrain is a mixture of low forested ridges, river flats and expanding suburbs, and the city stretches over a large area without a single dominant centre.

With a population of around three hundred and sixty thousand, Logan is one of the largest local government areas in Australia. Its importance lies in its position within the fast-growing corridor between two major cities, and in its remarkable social composition. Residents come from more than two hundred and fifteen birthplaces and speak well over a hundred languages, with particularly large Pacific Islander, Maori, Vietnamese and African communities, making Logan one of the most culturally diverse places in the country.

The Yugambeh and Yuggera peoples have lived in this region for many thousands of years, and their languages and place names remain in use. European settlement followed the establishment of the Brisbane penal colony, with timber getters and then cotton and sugar farmers moving into the Logan valley from the 1820s. German immigrant families settled the district in numbers during the nineteenth century, leaving names such as Beenleigh and Waterford. Logan City was formally created in 1978 and grew rapidly from the 1980s as affordable housing attracted young families.

Among the landmarks is the Beenleigh Artisan Distillery, established in 1884 and the oldest operating rum distillery in Australia, now open for tours. The Daisy Hill Conservation Park has a koala centre and long forest walking tracks, while the Kingston Butter Factory has been converted into a cultural precinct with performance spaces. The Logan Art Gallery, the Logan Entertainment Centre and the parklands along the river at Logan Village and Eagleby give the city its public focus. The Gold Coast beaches and the rainforests of Tamborine Mountain are both within easy reach.

Cultural life reflects the diversity of the population. Pacific Island church choirs, Polynesian dance groups, Vietnamese and Indian food streets, African drumming and a busy calendar of multicultural festivals are all part of ordinary life here, and rugby league is followed with real passion, since the district has produced a long list of national representatives.

Transport is dominated by the Pacific Motorway and the Logan Motorway, which carry traffic between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and by the Beenleigh railway line, which offers frequent commuter services to central Brisbane in around forty minutes. Bus routes connect the suburbs, and Brisbane Airport is about an hour away.

Education is served by the Logan campus of Griffith University, TAFE Queensland facilities and a large network of state and independent schools, with strong programmes aimed at supporting students from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Logan City is significant as a portrait of contemporary suburban Australia. Young, fast growing and genuinely multicultural, it offers bushland, river country and a strong community life within reach of two of the country's best-known destinations.
