Long Beach
Long Beach is a major coastal city in Los Angeles County, California, located approximately 30 kilometers south of downtown Los Angeles along the Pacific Ocean. With a population of approximately 460,000 people, it is the seventh largest city in California and a vital component of the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. Situated along the San Pedro Bay, Long Beach is defined by its waterfront character, diverse population, and its crucial role as one of the world's busiest port cities.
The city was formally incorporated in 1897 and developed rapidly in the early twentieth century, initially as a beach resort destination for Angelenos. Oil was discovered offshore in the 1920s, leading to a dramatic economic expansion and the construction of offshore drilling platforms that still operate in the bay. The establishment of the Naval Station Long Beach brought substantial military presence and economic activity throughout much of the twentieth century, shaping the city's industrial and demographic character.
The Port of Long Beach, together with the adjacent Port of Los Angeles, forms the San Pedro Bay Port Complex — the busiest port in the United States and one of the top ten busiest ports in the world. The port handles hundreds of billions of dollars worth of trade annually, processing approximately 40 percent of all containerized imports entering the United States. This makes Long Beach an indispensable node in global supply chains, employing tens of thousands of workers in logistics, warehousing, and shipping-related industries.
Long Beach has developed a vibrant cultural scene that belies its industrial reputation. The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) is the only museum in the western United States dedicated exclusively to modern and contemporary Latin American art, reflecting the city's large Latino community. The Aquarium of the Pacific is one of the most visited aquariums in the country, featuring marine life from the Pacific Ocean in spectacular exhibits. The Queen Mary, a retired ocean liner permanently moored in the harbor, operates as a hotel, museum, and entertainment venue.
The city's beachfront and the downtown area around Pine Avenue have undergone significant revitalization, with restaurants, entertainment venues, craft breweries, and boutique shops creating a lively urban core. The Long Beach Grand Prix, an Indycar race held on temporary street circuits through the downtown, is one of the most popular motorsport events in the United States.
Long Beach's extraordinary ethnic diversity — it is home to one of the largest Cambodian communities outside of Southeast Asia, as well as substantial Latino, Filipino, and African American communities — makes it one of the most multicultural cities in the United States. This diversity is woven into the city's food, arts, and neighborhood character, giving Long Beach a distinctly cosmopolitan identity alongside its port city grit.
