Longyan

Longyan is a prefecture-level city located in western Fujian Province in southeastern China. Nestled among the mountains and rivers of the Minxi region, the city borders Guangdong Province to the south and Jiangxi Province to the west, giving it a strategic position as a crossroads between these regions. The city's total population is approximately 2.6 million, with an economy rooted in coal mining, manufacturing, and increasingly, tourism centered around its extraordinary earthen architecture.

Longyan's history spans over a thousand years, but the city is most celebrated for its role as a homeland of the Hakka people, an ethnic Han subgroup with a distinct dialect, culture, and architectural tradition. The Hakka settled in the mountainous areas of Fujian, Guangdong, and Jiangxi centuries ago, and their most remarkable legacy in the Longyan area is the tulou — massive circular or square communal earthen structures built for collective living and defense.

The Fujian Tulou, a collection of these extraordinary fortress-like dwellings concentrated largely in the Yongding District of Longyan, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. These remarkable structures, some of which date back over 600 years, could house dozens of families under a single roof and were designed to be self-sufficient communities. The most famous, Chengqi Lou, is often called the king of tulou and is five stories high with 72 rooms on each floor. Visitors from around the world come to explore these living monuments to Hakka ingenuity and community life.

Beyond its iconic earthen architecture, Longyan has a significant place in modern Chinese history as a revolutionary base area. During the Chinese Civil War, the Minxi Soviet was established here, and the city was an important supply and training ground for the Red Army. The Gutian Conference, a pivotal meeting in 1929 that helped shape the organizational principles of the Chinese Communist Party, was held in the Shanghang County area of Longyan.

The local economy has traditionally relied on coal and mineral extraction, with Longyan sitting above significant coal deposits. In recent years, the city has diversified into manufacturing, particularly machinery, cigarettes, and food processing. The expansion of high-speed rail connections has made the area more accessible for tourism, and the tulou heritage zone has become a major driver of the local hospitality industry.

Longyan offers visitors a unique combination of UNESCO-listed cultural heritage, rich revolutionary history, and scenic mountain landscapes. The city's commitment to preserving its tulou heritage while modernizing its infrastructure makes it one of the most culturally rewarding destinations in Fujian Province.
