Luzhou
Luzhou is a prefecture-level city located in the southeastern part of Sichuan Province in southwestern China, situated at the confluence of the Tuojiang and Yangtze rivers. With a population of over 5 million in its administrative area, Luzhou is one of the significant cities in Sichuan and is particularly celebrated as the hometown of one of China's most beloved liquors — Luzhou Laojiao baijiu, a white spirit with a history spanning more than 400 years.
The history of Luzhou is ancient, with the area having been inhabited and developed since the Qin and Han dynasties. The city's position at the meeting of two major rivers made it an important commercial and transportation hub throughout imperial history. During the Ming Dynasty, the tradition of distilling baijiu (Chinese grain liquor) in Luzhou was formalized, and by the Qing Dynasty the famous Luzhou Laojiao (literally Old Cellar) brand had established the city's enduring identity as China's liquor capital.
Luzhou Laojiao, along with Moutai from Guizhou, is one of China's most prestigious baijiu brands. The company's production facilities include some of the oldest continuous distilling cellars in China, dating back to 1573, and have been designated as a protected cultural heritage site. The original cellar pools are still in use today, tended by master distillers following centuries-old techniques, and a museum on the distillery grounds showcases the history and craft of baijiu production for visitors who tour the facility.
Beyond its famous liquor, Luzhou offers scenic landscapes along the Yangtze River and its tributaries. The ancient town of Yaozi, the Fangshan Forest Park, and various temple and monastery sites scattered across the region's hills and river valleys provide cultural and natural attractions. The Yushen Mountain scenic area features caves, waterfalls, and ancient Buddhist carvings that draw visitors seeking tranquility away from the urban center.
The local economy, while anchored by the liquor industry, has diversified into chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. The city's riverside location gives it good logistical advantages for shipping goods along the Yangtze River system. Agriculture in the surrounding hilly countryside produces grain, vegetables, citrus fruits, and lychees, contributing to the local food culture.
Luzhou has an airport offering connections to major Chinese cities and benefits from expressway links to Chengdu, Chongqing, and other regional centers. With its renowned liquor heritage, scenic river landscapes, and long history as a commercial crossroads of the Yangtze River system, Luzhou offers a distinctive taste of Sichuan culture for visitors and travelers exploring southwestern China.
