Ma’anshan

Ma'anshan is a prefecture-level city located in the eastern part of Anhui Province, China, situated along the southern bank of the Yangtze River near the border with Jiangsu Province. With a population of approximately 2.3 million, Ma'anshan serves as an important industrial and commercial hub in the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone. Its name, meaning "Horse Saddle Mountain," derives from the shape of a local hill steeped in legend.

The area around Ma'anshan has a history stretching back more than two thousand years, with archaeological evidence of human settlement during the Chu Kingdom period. The city is famously associated with Li Bai, one of China's greatest poets of the Tang Dynasty, who spent his final years here and is said to have drowned in the Yangtze River while attempting to embrace the moon's reflection. A memorial park and museum dedicated to the poet attract literary enthusiasts and tourists from across China.

Ma'anshan rose to prominence in the mid-20th century as a major center of China's iron and steel industry. The Magang Group — one of China's leading steel manufacturers — was established here and remains a cornerstone of the local economy. The city's steel production capacity places it among the most significant industrial cities in eastern China, and its iron and steel products are used across various sectors of the national economy.

Beyond industry, Ma'anshan offers a pleasant natural environment. The Yushan National Forest Park, located within the city, provides hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Caishiji, a renowned scenic spot along the Yangtze River, is celebrated both for its dramatic cliffs and rock formations and for its deep connection to Li Bai's poetry. The annual Chrysanthemum Festival held in autumn draws visitors to enjoy the city's parks and gardens at their most colorful.

The city's transportation infrastructure has developed significantly, with expressways and high-speed rail connections linking Ma'anshan to nearby Nanjing and other major cities in the Yangtze River Delta region. The city also benefits from river freight transportation via the Yangtze, an important logistical advantage for its industrial operations.

Ma'anshan is home to several colleges and vocational institutions that support the technical and engineering needs of its industrial economy. With ongoing urban development, environmental improvements, and growing integration into the wider Yangtze River Delta, the city is steadily transitioning from a purely industrial base toward a more diversified and livable urban center.
