Maebashi

Maebashi is the capital of Gunma Prefecture, in the northern part of the Kantō region of central Japan. The city lies on the Kantō plain where it meets the foothills of the mountains, spread along the banks of the Tone River, Japan's largest river by drainage area, and overlooked to the north by the broad volcanic massif of Mount Akagi. About a hundred kilometres north-west of Tokyo, it sits close enough to the capital for day trips yet firmly within a landscape of farmland, hot springs and mountains.

Roughly three hundred and thirty thousand people live in Maebashi, which shares regional prominence with the neighbouring city of Takasaki. Together they form the economic core of Gunma, a prefecture known for vehicle and electronics manufacturing, food processing and some of the most productive agriculture in eastern Japan. Konjac, cabbage, cucumbers and wheat are grown in quantity here, and local wheat supports a strong tradition of noodle dishes.

Maebashi developed around a castle held by the Sakai and later the Matsudaira families during the Edo period, though the fortress was repeatedly damaged by the shifting course of the Tone River and little of it remains today. The city's modern prosperity was built on silk. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Gunma became the centre of Japan's silk reeling industry, and Maebashi's mills, together with the nearby Tomioka Silk Mill now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, helped finance the country's rapid modernisation. Air raids in 1945 destroyed much of the centre, which was rebuilt on a spacious modern plan.

The city calls itself the city of water, greenery and poetry, a phrase that captures its character well. Rivers and canals run through the streets, and the poet Sakutarō Hagiwara, a founding figure of modern Japanese free verse, was born here and is commemorated by a museum and a literary park. Other attractions include Gunma Prefectural Museum of Art at Gunma no Mori, the Arts Maebashi contemporary gallery in a converted department store, the historic Rinkōkaku guesthouse and the vast Shikishima Park, famous for its rose garden. In summer the Maebashi Tanabata Festival fills the shopping arcades with decorations, and in January the Hatsuichi market draws crowds seeking good fortune.

Nature is never far away. Mount Akagi, with its crater lake, hiking trails and winter ice fishing, rises directly north of the city, and the hot spring resorts of Ikaho and Kusatsu are within easy reach. The dry, powerful winter wind that sweeps down from the mountains, known locally as the Akagi oroshi, is a well-known feature of life in Maebashi.

The city is served by JR lines connecting to Takasaki, where Shinkansen trains reach Tokyo in under an hour, along with expressways and a dense bus network, though many residents rely on cars. Gunma University maintains important faculties here, including medicine, and the prefectural women's university and several colleges add to a solid academic presence.

Maebashi is an approachable, comfortable capital that combines industrial heritage, literary tradition and mountain scenery, offering an appealing glimpse of provincial Japan within easy reach of Tokyo.
