Makati City

Makati City is the financial capital of the Philippines, located within the National Capital Region of Metro Manila. With a land area of just 27 square kilometers and a daytime population that swells to several million due to the influx of workers and visitors, Makati is one of the most densely urbanized and economically vital cities in Southeast Asia. Despite its small physical size, it generates an outsized proportion of the Philippines' national economic output and serves as the headquarters for the majority of the country's largest corporations, banks, and financial institutions.

The history of Makati as a modern urban center began in the mid-twentieth century when the Ayala Corporation began developing a planned urban district on land that had previously been the Hacienda Makati, a large sugar estate. The Makati Central Business District, centered on Ayala Avenue, was meticulously planned with wide boulevards, green spaces, and modern buildings, creating a commercial district unlike anything else in the Philippines at the time. The transformation of the area from rural estate to gleaming business district stands as one of the most remarkable urban development stories in Southeast Asian history. Over subsequent decades, Makati became synonymous with modernity, commerce, and prosperity in the Philippine context.

The Makati Central Business District remains the beating heart of the Philippine economy. Ayala Avenue and its surrounding streets are lined with skyscrapers housing the headquarters of banks, insurance companies, multinational corporations, and professional services firms. The Philippine Stock Exchange has its main office in Makati, as does the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. The business district draws tens of thousands of office workers daily and has spawned a sophisticated ecosystem of restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, and service businesses catering to the professional class.

Beyond business, Makati is renowned for its shopping and entertainment options. Greenbelt, Glorietta, and the Ayala Center mall complex form one of the most sophisticated retail and lifestyle destinations in Southeast Asia, featuring luxury brands, cinema complexes, restaurants, and lush outdoor gardens. Bonifacio Global City, though technically in Taguig, borders Makati and functions as an extension of its upscale commercial and residential environment. The Poblacion district, Makati's old town area, has been transformed into one of Metro Manila's most vibrant bar and restaurant scenes, attracting both locals and expatriates.

Makati is home to a significant expatriate community and has a cosmopolitan character that distinguishes it from other Philippine cities. Numerous international embassies, consulates, and the headquarters of major international organizations are located here. The city's hotels range from budget options to some of the finest luxury properties in the country, and its international culinary scene is extraordinarily diverse.

The city is well connected by the Makati-Ayala Station of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and multiple bus routes. While traffic congestion remains a challenge in Metro Manila as a whole, Makati has invested in pedestrian infrastructure and is relatively walkable within its central districts. Makati's combination of financial power, upscale amenities, and international character make it the undisputed commercial capital of the Philippines and a major business destination in Southeast Asia.
