Malir Cantonment lies in the eastern part of Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, in the province of Sindh. It occupies flat, dry land in the valley of the seasonal Malir River, a short distance inland from the Arabian Sea and close to the city's international airport. The climate is arid and hot, with very high summer temperatures moderated a little by the sea breeze, mild pleasant winters and only a few centimetres of rain each year, usually falling in brief monsoon downpours.

Several hundred thousand people live in the cantonment and the neighbourhoods that have grown around it. It is one of six cantonment areas within Karachi, administered by its own cantonment board rather than the city government, an arrangement inherited from the colonial system of separate military districts and continued after independence.

The Malir area itself is far older than the cantonment. For centuries it was known as the garden district of Karachi, watered by wells and by the seasonal flow of the river, and its orchards supplied the city with guavas, mangoes, bananas, melons and vegetables. Villages of Sindhi and Baloch farmers cultivated this green belt long before the port grew into a metropolis, and older residents still remember when the road out to Malir passed through continuous orchards. Urban expansion, the sinking of the water table and the growth of housing schemes have reduced that agriculture greatly, though pockets survive.

The cantonment was established in the decades after 1947 as a garrison for the Pakistan Army, and it developed into a carefully planned district that contrasts sharply with much of the surrounding metropolis. Wide tree lined avenues, roundabouts, planned sectors, parks, schools, hospitals and reliable services give it a calm and orderly character, and it has become one of the more sought after residential areas in eastern Karachi. Military installations, training establishments and officers' housing occupy much of the land, alongside civilian neighbourhoods, markets and commercial streets.

Community life centres on family, mosques, sports grounds and the shopping areas that serve residents, with cricket played on every open space. The population reflects Karachi as a whole, bringing together Urdu speaking families, Sindhis, Punjabis, Pashtuns, Baloch and others, and the food available ranges from Sindhi and Balochi grilled meats to the biryani for which the city is famous throughout South Asia.

Everything Karachi offers lies within reach, including the beaches at Clifton and Hawke's Bay, the tomb of the country's founder, the colonial architecture of the old city and the bazaars of Saddar. The Super Highway and the national motorway toward Hyderabad pass nearby, the airport is a few minutes away, and buses, minibuses and ride hailing services connect the district to the rest of the city, though traffic congestion is a persistent challenge.

Schools, colleges and cadet institutions within the cantonment have a strong local reputation, and several universities lie in the surrounding districts.

Malir Cantonment is significant as a planned, green and well ordered corner of one of the world's largest and busiest cities.
