Man’gyŏngdae-ri

Man’gyŏngdae-ri is a district on the south-western edge of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. It occupies gently rising ground above a bend of the Taedong River, about twelve kilometres from the city centre, in an area of low wooded hills, orchards and open parkland. The name means the terrace of ten thousand views, a reference to the panorama from the hill above the village, and it has given the district a place in the national imagination out of all proportion to its size.

Several tens of thousands of people live in the district, which forms one of the administrative divisions of the capital and combines residential blocks with schools, factories and extensive recreation grounds. Its importance is symbolic rather than economic, since Man’gyŏngdae is presented as the sacred birthplace of the North Korean state.

The village was an ordinary farming settlement until the twentieth century. Kim Il Sung, the founder of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, was born here in 1912 into a poor peasant family, and after the establishment of the state the site became the focus of an elaborate commemorative landscape. The thatched cottage where he was born has been preserved with its earthenware jars and farming tools, and the surrounding hill was laid out as a park. Almost every organised visit to Pyongyang, whether by citizens or foreign guests, includes a stop here, and the district has been carefully maintained as a place of pilgrimage.

Besides the native house and its museum, the district contains several major institutions. The Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace offers after-school instruction in music, dance, calligraphy, gymnastics and computing, and its performances are among the best known cultural displays in the country. The Mangyongdae Revolutionary School trains the children of war veterans and officials. The Mangyongdae Funfair, with its imported rides, is a popular family destination, and the Taedong riverbank, the Kwangbok Street housing development and the nearby Chongchun sports village add to the amenities. The tomb of the ancient Koguryo king Tongmyong lies not far to the south-east.

Daily life follows the pattern of the capital, with organised outings, mass sporting events and the annual Mangyongdae Prize Marathon, which starts in Pyongyang and attracts international runners. Picnics on the hillside in spring, when the fruit trees blossom, are a long-standing tradition among Pyongyang residents.

Transport connections to the centre are good by local standards. The Mangyongdae Line of the Pyongyang metro serves the district, along with trolleybuses and tram routes, and the main road west towards Nampo passes through. Pyongyang Sunan International Airport lies on the opposite side of the city.

Educational institutions in the area include the revolutionary school, technical colleges and one of the country's principal teacher training establishments, reflecting the district's role in preparing future officials.

Man’gyŏngdae-ri is significant less for its size than for its meaning. It is the ceremonial heart of North Korean national history, a green suburb where the country's official story of its own origins is set out for every visitor.
