Mangalore

Mangalore, officially known as Mangaluru, is a major port city located on the southwestern coast of India in the state of Karnataka. Situated along the Arabian Sea between the Western Ghats mountains and the coastline, the city is the administrative headquarters of Dakshina Kannada district. It lies approximately 350 kilometers northwest of Bengaluru and serves as the chief urban center of the coastal Karnataka, or Tulu Nadu, region.

With a population of approximately 700,000 in the city and over 900,000 in the urban agglomeration, Mangalore is one of Karnataka's most significant cities. Its natural harbor, cosmopolitan culture, and position as a commercial hub make it an important economic center for the entire Konkan coast region of southwestern India.

The history of Mangalore stretches back centuries as a coastal trading port. The city was part of the Vijayanagara Empire and later controlled by various kingdoms including the Keladi Nayakas and the Bijapur Sultanate. The Portuguese arrived in the early 16th century and established a presence that influenced the city's architecture and Christian communities. Later, Mangalore was a key possession of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the rulers of Mysore, who fortified it as a naval base. British colonial rule followed, and the city developed as a major port and commercial center under their administration.

Mangalore is known for its remarkable religious and cultural diversity. It is home to ancient Hindu temples such as the Kadri Manjunatha Temple, dating to the 10th century, and the Kudroli Gokarnath Temple, which celebrates an elaborate Dasara festival. The Rosario Cathedral and St. Aloysius Chapel, with its breathtaking ceiling murals painted by Italian Jesuit artist Antonio Moscheni, represent the city's significant Catholic heritage. Mosques serving the Beary Muslim community add another layer to the city's spiritual landscape. This coexistence of faiths has historically given Mangalore a reputation for communal harmony.

The city's cuisine is renowned throughout India. Mangalorean food, particularly the seafood preparations of the Tulu and Bunt communities, is celebrated for its bold use of coconut, tamarind, and spices. Dishes such as Neer Dosa, Kori Rotti (chicken curry with crispy rice flatbread), Ghee Roast, and Mangalorean fish curry have developed dedicated followings far beyond the city's borders.

The New Mangalore Port is one of India's major ports, handling significant volumes of cashew nuts, coffee, iron ore, and petroleum products. The port's operations are central to the regional economy. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) is another major economic anchor.

Mangalore is served by the Mangaluru International Airport and is connected by rail to Bengaluru, Mumbai, and other cities. The National Highway 66 runs through the city along the coast.

The city hosts Manipal Academy of Higher Education (near Udupi), National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), and Mangalore University, making the region an important educational cluster. Mangalore's combination of natural beauty, cultural diversity, excellent food, and economic vitality makes it one of India's most livable and distinctive coastal cities.
