Manhattan

Manhattan is the most densely populated and internationally recognized borough of New York City, the largest city in the United States. Located on a narrow island bounded by the Hudson River to the west, the East River to the east, and New York Harbor to the south, Manhattan is home to approximately 1.6 million residents, but its daytime population swells to over 3.9 million as workers and visitors flood in from the surrounding boroughs and region.

Manhattan was originally inhabited by the Lenape people before Dutch colonists established the settlement of New Amsterdam on its southern tip in 1626, famously purchasing the island for a modest sum of trade goods. After British rule and the American Revolution, New York City grew explosively through the 19th and 20th centuries, with massive waves of immigration from Europe, the Caribbean, and around the world shaping what became the most cosmopolitan city on earth. Manhattan's iconic grid street layout, established in 1811, defined the city's urban form for centuries to come.

Manhattan is home to some of the world's most recognizable landmarks. The Statue of Liberty stands in the harbor as a global symbol of freedom. Central Park, an 843-acre green oasis in the heart of the island, is one of the most visited urban parks in the world. Times Square, with its blazing neon lights and constant crowds, is a symbol of American commercial and entertainment culture. The Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the recently completed One World Trade Center define a skyline recognized around the globe.

Culturally, Manhattan is unmatched in scope and variety. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Guggenheim are all world-class institutions. Broadway remains the premier destination for live theater anywhere in the world. The city's music scene, from Carnegie Hall to jazz clubs in the Village, continues to influence global popular culture.

Manhattan's transportation network includes the New York City Subway, one of the world's oldest and most extensive rapid transit systems, as well as buses, ferries, and a vast network of tunnels and bridges connecting to the outer boroughs and New Jersey. John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports together form one of the world's busiest aviation hubs.

Columbia University and New York University are among the prestigious academic institutions based in Manhattan, while Wall Street in Lower Manhattan remains the financial capital of the world, housing the New York Stock Exchange and the headquarters of major global banks and financial firms.

Manhattan is the city that has arguably shaped modern global culture more than any other, serving as the world's stage for finance, fashion, media, art, and ambition. Its relentless energy, extraordinary diversity, and towering achievements continue to make it one of the most compelling places on earth.
