Mannheim
Mannheim stands at the confluence of the Rhine and the Neckar in the state of Baden-Württemberg in south-western Germany, at the northern end of the warm Upper Rhine plain. Together with Ludwigshafen across the river and nearby Heidelberg it forms the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, home to more than two million people. The city itself has a population of around three hundred and fifteen thousand.
Mannheim's most distinctive feature is its street plan. The old town within the former fortifications is laid out as a grid of blocks that have no street names at all: each square is identified by a letter and a number, from A1 beside the palace outward, a system unique in Germany that visitors find baffling and residents consider entirely logical. The city is a major industrial and logistical centre, with one of Europe's largest inland ports, engine and machinery manufacturing, and a strong chemical and pharmaceutical presence in the surrounding region.
The settlement received town rights in 1607 when the Elector Palatine built a fortress here, and the grid was laid out at that time. Destroyed in the wars of the seventeenth century and rebuilt, Mannheim reached its zenith in the eighteenth century, when Elector Carl Theodor moved his court here and constructed one of the largest baroque palaces in Europe. His orchestra became the most celebrated in the world, and the composers of the so-called Mannheim School developed techniques of dynamics and orchestration that shaped classical music and directly influenced Mozart, who visited more than once. In 1782 the National Theatre staged the premiere of Schiller's The Robbers.
The city has an extraordinary record of invention. Karl Drais demonstrated the first two-wheeled running machine, the ancestor of the bicycle, on the roads here in 1817, and in 1886 Carl Benz patented the first practical motor car in Mannheim, while his wife Bertha made the world's first long-distance drive from the city to Pforzheim two years later.
Landmarks include the immense palace, now largely occupied by the university, the Jesuit church, and above all the water tower on Friedrichsplatz, an art nouveau ensemble of fountains, arcades and gardens that serves as the city's emblem. The Kunsthalle Mannheim holds an outstanding collection of modern art in a striking new building, the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums cover archaeology and world cultures, and the Luisenpark is among the finest urban parks in Germany, expanded for the national garden show in 2023.
Named a UNESCO City of Music in 2014, Mannheim has a national theatre, an opera house, a pop music academy and a busy live scene, and its population, drawn from around one hundred and seventy countries, gives its food and street life real variety. Ice hockey inspires devotion at the SAP Arena.
The main station is one of the busiest junctions on the German high-speed network, with Frankfurt half an hour away and direct trains to Paris, and trams and buses serve the region. The University of Mannheim is Germany's leading school of business and economics.
Mannheim rewards visitors with invention, music and an urban plan like nowhere else.
