Marienthal is a residential quarter in the east of Hamburg, Germany's second largest city, belonging to the borough of Wandsbek. It lies a few kilometres from the city centre in the valley of the small Wandse stream, and it is among the leafiest and most sought after districts in the metropolis. Hamburg's maritime climate gives the area mild winters, moderate summers and frequent rain carried in from the North Sea, conditions that keep its gardens and parks green for much of the year.

The quarter itself is home to something over ten thousand residents, within a city of nearly two million and a metropolitan region of more than five. Its character is overwhelmingly residential, with villas, detached houses and low apartment buildings set among mature trees along quiet streets, and with very little industry or through traffic.

Marienthal developed in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Hamburg merchants and shipowners began building country houses beyond the old city on land that had been farmland and heath. The name, meaning valley of Mary, derives from an estate in the district. Villas in historicist and Jugendstil styles went up along the new avenues, and the area was incorporated into Hamburg administratively in the twentieth century. Like much of eastern Hamburg it suffered heavy destruction during the bombing raids of the summer of 1943, and postwar rebuilding filled the gaps with modern housing, but a considerable stock of original villas survives and is protected.

Green space is the district's defining feature. The Eichtalpark follows the course of the Wandse with old trees, meadows and ponds, and a chain of parks and allotments runs along the stream through neighbouring quarters, forming a continuous walking and cycling route towards the city centre. The nearby Jenischpark, Ohlsdorf cemetery, one of the largest park cemeteries in the world, and the Wandsbeker Gehölz are all within easy reach.

Everyday amenities are found in adjoining Wandsbek Markt, a busy shopping centre, while the full range of Hamburg's attractions is close at hand. These include the Elbphilharmonie concert hall on the harbour, the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Miniatur Wunderland model railway, the Reeperbahn entertainment quarter, the Alster lakes and a remarkable collection of art museums.

Transport is well organised. Bus routes link Marienthal to the U1 underground line at Wandsbek Markt and to the S Bahn network, and the whole city is covered by an integrated ticketing system. Hamburg Airport lies about twenty minutes away, and the main station offers fast trains to Berlin, Copenhagen and the Ruhr.

Hamburg is a major centre of higher education, with the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg University of Technology and numerous specialist institutions serving students who often live in quieter districts such as this one.

Marienthal is important as an example of the comfortable garden suburbs that give Hamburg its reputation as one of the greenest and most liveable large cities in Europe.
