Maroua lies in the far north of Cameroon, in the Sahelian belt where the savannah thins towards the Sahara, close to the borders with Chad and Nigeria. The city is built along the broad sandy bed of the Kaliao River, which fills only during the short rainy season, and the jagged silhouette of the Mandara Mountains rises to the west. Avenues shaded by neem trees run between low houses of mud brick and cement, and the heat before the rains is intense.

Around three hundred thousand people live here, making Maroua the capital of the Far North Region and the largest city in the northern half of the country. Its importance is administrative and commercial: it is the market town for a densely populated farming region producing cotton, millet, sorghum, groundnuts and onions, and the meeting point of trade routes running into Chad, Nigeria and Niger.

The area has long been settled, and the surrounding hills sheltered peoples who resisted the expansion of the plains states. Maroua itself developed under the Fulani, who established emirates across the Sahel in the nineteenth century following the jihad of Usman dan Fodio, and the local lamido still holds a respected traditional position. German colonial rule reached the region at the end of the nineteenth century, followed by French administration after the First World War, and the city grew as an administrative post. Independence and the creation of the Far North Region confirmed its role as the northern capital.

Maroua is best known for craftsmanship. Its artisans' quarter and the great central market produce embroidered cotton robes, tooled leather goods, brasswork, basketry and pottery of a quality that draws buyers from across Central Africa, and the Sunday market is one of the liveliest in the Sahel. The regional museum displays objects from the many peoples of the north, and the grand mosque and the lamido's palace anchor the older districts.

The countryside around the city is spectacular. The Mandara Mountains hold the villages of the Kapsiki and Mafa peoples, terraced fields and the extraordinary volcanic spire of Rhumsiki, one of the most photographed landscapes in Africa. Waza National Park to the north-east is the finest wildlife reserve in Cameroon, home to elephants, giraffes, antelope and lions. Security concerns in the border areas have affected tourism in recent years, and travellers check conditions carefully before visiting.

Local life reflects a remarkable ethnic mix of Fulani, Mafa, Kapsiki, Kanuri, Arab Choa, Toupouri and others. Fulfulde serves as the common language alongside French, festivals mark the Islamic calendar with horsemen in ceremonial dress, and music, dance and griot storytelling remain strong.

Roads connect Maroua to Garoua and the rest of Cameroon, and Salak airport lies just outside the city. The University of Maroua, founded in 2008, has grown quickly, adding teacher training, science and engineering faculties.
