Marrakesh

Marrakesh is one of the most celebrated cities in Morocco and in all of Africa, located at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in the west-central part of the country. With a population of approximately 1 million, Marrakesh is Morocco's fourth-largest city and one of its most important economic and cultural centers. Known as the Red City for the distinctive pinkish-red color of its mud-brick buildings and ramparts, Marrakesh has captivated travelers from around the world for centuries and remains one of the most visited destinations in Africa.

Founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, Marrakesh served as the capital of the Almoravid and later the Almohad empires, which at their height extended from the Iberian Peninsula across North Africa. Under these powerful dynasties, the city became a great center of Islamic learning, architecture, and culture. The Koutoubia Mosque, completed in the 12th century, with its iconic 70-meter minaret, remains the most recognizable symbol of the city and a masterpiece of Moorish architecture.

The old medina of Marrakesh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinthine world of narrow alleyways, artisan workshops, souks (markets), riads (traditional courtyard houses), mosques, and madrassahs that has changed little in its essential character over the centuries. At its heart lies Djemaa el-Fna, one of the most vibrant and extraordinary public spaces in the world. By day, the square is filled with orange juice vendors, snake charmers, henna artists, and storytellers; by night it transforms into an enormous open-air food market with dozens of stalls serving Moroccan cuisine under a canopy of smoke and stars.

The Bahia Palace, a stunning 19th-century complex of courtyards, gardens, and intricately decorated rooms, and the Saadian Tombs, a royal necropolis dating from the 16th century and hidden for centuries before being rediscovered in 1917, are among the finest historical monuments in the city. The Majorelle Garden, once owned by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and painted in electric blue, is a beautiful botanical garden and an enduring symbol of the city's artistic heritage. The Museum of Yves Saint Laurent nearby draws fashion lovers from around the world.

Marrakesh has developed into a major international tourism destination with a wide range of hotels from budget riads to ultra-luxury resorts. The city is also a significant center for crafts, with workshops producing high-quality leather goods, ceramics, metalwork, carpets, and woodwork that are sold in the souks and exported globally. The annual Marrakesh International Film Festival attracts filmmakers and celebrities from around the world.

The city is served by Marrakesh Menara Airport with excellent international connections. With its timeless medina, extraordinary public life, magnificent monuments, and dramatic location at the edge of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is a city of overwhelming sensory richness that continues to enchant all who visit.
