Matsuyama is the largest city on the island of Shikoku in Japan and serves as the capital of Ehime Prefecture. The Main Building of Dogo Onsen, a three-story wooden structure built in 1894 in a style reminiscent of traditional Japanese castle architecture, is a National Important Cultural Property and one of the most photographed buildings in Shikoku. The bath complex inspired the setting of Hayao Miyazaki's famous animated film Spirited Away, drawing additional interest from fans of Japanese animation worldwide. The surrounding Dogo Onsen district is filled with traditional shops, restaurants, and ryokan inns.

Matsuyama has a strong literary tradition. It was the birthplace of Masaoka Shiki, one of Japan's most celebrated poets and a pioneer of modern haiku. The Shiki Memorial Museum in the city honors his life and work, and a haiku culture remains deeply embedded in the city's identity. The city also has connections to the novelist Natsume Soseki, who lived in Matsuyama and based his novel Botchan partly on his experiences there. The Botchan train, a reproduction of the original steam-powered streetcar that runs in the city, is named in honor of this literary connection.

The city's economy is based on manufacturing, particularly paper and chemicals, as well as agriculture, fishing, and tourism. The Seto Inland Sea region produces excellent citrus fruits, and Ehime Prefecture is one of Japan's top producers of mikan mandarin oranges. Matsuyama's street tram system is one of the most extensive in Japan and remains a charming and practical feature of daily transportation. The city is accessible by ferry from Hiroshima and by flights from Tokyo and Osaka at Matsuyama Airport.
