Mauá
Mauá is an industrial city located in the ABC Paulista region of Greater São Paulo, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Bordering Santo André and São Bernardo do Campo, it lies approximately 22 kilometers southeast of the São Paulo city center. With a population of around 470,000 people, Mauá is a densely urbanized municipality that forms an integral part of one of the most important industrial corridors in Latin America. The city is named after the Viscount of Mauá, Irineu Evangelista de Sousa, a pioneering Brazilian entrepreneur and industrialist of the nineteenth century.
Mauá's urban development accelerated dramatically during Brazil's industrialization in the mid-twentieth century. The ABC region, which includes Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo, and São Caetano do Sul alongside Mauá, became the heartland of Brazilian automobile manufacturing and heavy industry. The city attracted significant investment from petrochemical, chemical, metallurgical, and plastics industries, and these sectors remain central to its economy today. The proximity to major highways and the port infrastructure of Santos made the region an ideal location for industrial production and distribution.
The labor movement has deep roots in Mauá and the broader ABC region. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, powerful strikes by metalworkers in this industrial belt helped catalyze Brazil's democratization process and gave rise to the Workers' Party (PT) and the career of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who later became President of Brazil. This working-class heritage is a point of pride and historical significance for residents of the city.
Despite its industrial character, Mauá has developed cultural institutions and urban amenities that serve its large population. The Paço das Artes de Mauá hosts cultural exhibitions, theater performances, and community events. The city has invested in parks and green spaces, including areas along the banks of local rivers. Shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues have expanded in recent decades as the local consumer economy has grown.
Mauá is well served by the regional metro and suburban rail network, with connections to São Paulo and other cities in the ABC region making daily commuting relatively straightforward. The city's road network connects it directly to important industrial zones and logistics hubs throughout Greater São Paulo.
Education is an important priority in Mauá, and the city is home to the Mauá Institute of Technology (IMT), a respected private engineering university that has produced generations of engineers and technology professionals who have contributed to Brazilian industry. This institution, combined with the city's strong industrial base and its historic role in the labor movement, gives Mauá a distinct identity as a city shaped by work, community, and technical innovation.
