Merlo lies on the western edge of Greater Buenos Aires, roughly thirty kilometres from the centre of the Argentine capital, on the flat and fertile plain of the pampas. It is the seat of a partido, or district, of the same name in Buenos Aires Province, and it forms part of the continuous urban belt that stretches westwards from the city along the old railway lines. The landscape is level and open, with wide avenues, low houses and long streets of workshops, markets and neighbourhood shops.

The district is home to well over half a million people, making it one of the most populous in the metropolitan region. Its importance comes less from monuments than from sheer scale and from its role as a place where working families live, trade and commute. Together with neighbouring Moreno, Ituzaingo and La Matanza, it forms part of the dense western suburbs that supply much of the labour force of the capital.

The town traces its origin to 1755, when Francisco de Merlo, a landowner of the colonial era, founded a settlement and built a chapel on the road that led west from Buenos Aires towards the interior. For more than a century it remained a modest rural village serving the surrounding estancias. Everything changed with the arrival of the western railway in the nineteenth century, which linked the area directly to the capital and encouraged the growth of new neighbourhoods around each station. Industrial expansion in the mid twentieth century and waves of internal migration turned the quiet village into a large suburban city.

The historic heart is the main square, shaded by trees and framed by the parish church and the municipal buildings. The old house associated with the founder now serves as a local museum, preserving colonial furniture, documents and objects from the early days of the settlement. Merlo is divided into distinct localities, each with its own character, among them San Antonio de Padua with its leafy streets and cafes, Libertad, Mariano Acosta and Pontevedra, where the suburbs begin to give way to open countryside.

Daily life revolves around neighbourhood football clubs, weekend markets, parrillas serving grilled beef, and pizzerias and cafes along the commercial avenues. Public parks and sports grounds provide space for the many young families who live here, and local festivals fill the squares with music and folk dancing.

Transport is dominated by the Sarmiento railway line, whose trains run frequently to Buenos Aires and carry large numbers of commuters each day, supported by an extensive network of bus routes and by main roads leading to the national highways. The National University of the West, founded in the district, has given local students access to higher education without travelling into the capital, and technical schools train workers for industry and services.

Merlo matters as a large, energetic and unpretentious city that shows the everyday life of suburban Argentina, close to the capital yet firmly rooted in its own history and community traditions.
