Mesa

Mesa is a city located in Maricopa County, Arizona, in the United States, positioned immediately east of Phoenix in the heart of the Phoenix metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 500,000 people, Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona and one of the largest cities in the entire United States. The city occupies a broad, flat desert plateau — the name Mesa is Spanish for "table," a reference to its elevated flat terrain — and enjoys the sunny, hot desert climate that defines the American Southwest.

Mesa was founded in 1878 by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Latter-day Saints or Mormons, who were sent by Brigham Young to establish a colony in the Salt River Valley. The settlers developed an extensive irrigation network drawing water from the Salt River, transforming the desert into farmland and establishing a community that eventually grew into one of the largest cities in the American West. The LDS heritage remains present in the city today, most visibly in the impressive Mesa Arizona Temple, which is one of the oldest Latter-day Saint temples and a landmark of local history.

The region around Mesa has been inhabited for much longer, however — the ancient Hohokam people built an extensive canal network in the Salt River Valley over a thousand years ago, creating one of the most sophisticated irrigation systems in pre-Columbian North America. The Mesa Grande Cultural Park preserves the remains of a major Hohokam platform mound and provides insights into this remarkable ancient civilization. Hohokam-era canals form the foundation of the modern irrigation network that still supports the region's agriculture.

Mesa has developed a wide array of cultural and entertainment attractions. The Arizona Museum of Natural History is one of the best natural history museums in the Southwest, featuring outstanding dinosaur exhibits and extensive collections related to Arizona's prehistoric cultures. The Mesa Arts Center is a striking modern performing arts complex that hosts theater, dance, and music events. The Chicago Cubs hold their spring training at Sloan Park in Mesa, making the city one of the most popular destinations in the Cactus League spring training circuit.

Demographically, Mesa has a diverse population with significant Latino, Native American, and Mormon communities. The city has grown rapidly in recent decades, attracting technology companies, healthcare facilities, and retirees drawn by the warm climate and relatively affordable cost of living compared to other major metropolitan areas.

Mesa's combination of ancient Native American heritage, pioneer settlement history, thriving arts scene, and modern suburban amenities makes it a substantial city in its own right, not merely a suburb of Phoenix. Its year-round sunshine, cultural resources, and strategic location in the Sun Belt continue to fuel its remarkable growth.
