Mianzhu, Deyang, Sichuan
Mianzhu is a county-level city administered by Deyang, a prefecture-level city in Sichuan Province, southwestern China. Located on the Chengdu Plain approximately 80 kilometers north of Chengdu, the provincial capital, Mianzhu sits at the foot of the Qionglai Mountains where the mountain terrain gives way to the fertile flat lands of the Sichuan Basin. The city has a population of around 500,000 people and is known for its agricultural productivity, manufacturing industry, and a devastating chapter in its recent history connected to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
Mianzhu has a history reaching back thousands of years. The area was part of the ancient Shu Kingdom and later absorbed into successive Chinese dynasties as the Sichuan region was integrated into the Chinese imperial system. The city developed as an agricultural market town serving the farming communities of the surrounding plains and foothills. In more recent centuries, Mianzhu became known for its silk production and the manufacture of New Year paintings, a traditional folk art that was produced in the region for centuries. Mianzhu New Year paintings, with their vivid colors and traditional motifs celebrating prosperity and good fortune, received national recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.
The 2008 Sichuan earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, struck with devastating force near Wenchuan but caused severe destruction across a wide area including Mianzhu. The city suffered significant loss of life and widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure. The collapse of school buildings in particular caused heartbreaking casualties among children, drawing international attention. The reconstruction of Mianzhu in the years following the earthquake was rapid and comprehensive, supported by Guangdong Province under China's partner-province relief and reconstruction program. Today, the rebuilt city features modern infrastructure, new schools, hospitals, and public facilities.
The economy of Mianzhu is anchored by agriculture and manufacturing. Rice, wheat, and rapeseed are major crops in the surrounding plains. The city is a significant producer of Sichuan liquor, and several distilleries produce baijiu, the strong Chinese grain spirit that is an important industry across Sichuan Province. Chemical, mechanical, and electronics manufacturing plants also operate in the city's industrial zones. A special economic development zone established in the post-earthquake reconstruction period attracted new investment and diversified the local economy.
Cultural attractions in Mianzhu include the New Year Painting Village, where visitors can observe artisans creating traditional paintings and purchase authentic works. The Jiulong Mountain scenic area, with its forests and hot springs, offers natural recreation opportunities in the hills above the city. The Sanjiangyuan scenic spot, where three rivers converge, is a picturesque natural area popular with local visitors.
Mianzhu is accessible by road and rail from Chengdu, with the journey taking under two hours. The city exemplifies the resilience of Chinese communities in the face of natural disaster and the capacity of China's development model to rapidly rebuild and modernize even severely damaged areas. Today, Mianzhu stands as a testimony to reconstruction success while maintaining its rich cultural and agricultural traditions.
