Milton Keynes lies in the south-east of England, in Buckinghamshire, roughly halfway between London and Birmingham and about eighty kilometres north-west of the capital. It occupies gently rolling countryside between the Great Ouse and the Grand Union Canal, and unlike almost every other English city of its size it was designed rather than grown, laid out on a grid of tree-lined dual carriageways with roundabouts at every junction and residential neighbourhoods tucked into the squares between them.

The urban area is home to around three hundred thousand people and is one of the fastest growing places in the United Kingdom. Its economy is unusually diverse for such a young city, with headquarters and distribution centres for retail, logistics, technology and financial companies, a strong motor industry presence, and a reputation as a testing ground for new ideas, from autonomous delivery robots on the pavements to trials of driverless vehicles. Employment levels and productivity rank among the highest in the country outside London.

The land it stands on is far older than the plan. Roman roads and medieval villages such as Great Linford, Woughton and the original hamlet of Milton Keynes survive within the modern layout, while Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford were established towns long before the new city arrived. Milton Keynes was designated a new town in 1967 to relieve housing pressure in London, and its master plan, with generous green space, separate cycle routes known as redways and a landscape of millions of newly planted trees, was radical for its time. City status was granted in 2022.

Its most historically significant site is Bletchley Park, the wartime codebreaking centre where Alan Turing and his colleagues broke the German Enigma cipher, now a museum that ranks among the most visited attractions in the region and stands beside the National Museum of Computing. Other landmarks include the shopping centre known as Centre:MK, which stretches for almost a kilometre under a glass roof, the Xscape building with its indoor ski slope, the open-air National Bowl concert arena and the herd of Concrete Cows, a piece of public art from 1978 that became an affectionate civic emblem. Campbell Park, the Peace Pagoda beside Willen Lake and the alignment of Midsummer Boulevard with the solstice sunrise reflect the interest of the planners in landscape and symbolism.

Culture is served by MK Gallery, Milton Keynes Theatre, a lively music scene and the football club MK Dons at Stadium MK. The Open University, the largest university in Britain and a pioneer of distance learning, has its headquarters and campus here, joined by a further education college and a new city centre university development. Trains from Milton Keynes Central reach London Euston in around half an hour on the West Coast Main Line, and the M1 motorway runs along the eastern edge of the city.

Milton Keynes is important as the most ambitious British experiment in planned urban living and as a thriving modern economic centre.
