Mingora
Mingora is the largest city of the Swat Valley in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of northern Pakistan. It stands on the banks of the Swat River at around a thousand metres above sea level, ringed by terraced fields, orchards and steep green mountains that climb towards the snow peaks of the Hindu Kush. The valley is often described as the Switzerland of Pakistan, and Mingora is its commercial heart, sitting immediately beside the administrative town of Saidu Sharif.
Some three hundred and fifty thousand people live in the city, most of them Pashtuns of the Yusufzai tribes, and Pashto is the everyday language. Trade dominates the economy, with crowded bazaars supplying the whole upper valley, and the surrounding countryside produces peaches, apples, apricots, walnuts, rice and honey. Emerald mining in the hills above the town, handicrafts, embroidery, furniture making and above all tourism provide further employment.
Swat has an extraordinarily deep history. Known in antiquity as Uddiyana, it was a heartland of the Gandhara civilisation and one of the most important centres of Buddhism in South Asia, visited by Chinese pilgrims who described hundreds of monasteries along the river. Alexander the Great campaigned through these valleys, and later the region passed to Hindu Shahi rulers, then to Muslim dynasties. From 1849 until 1969 Swat was a princely state ruled by the Wali, a period remembered for its schools, roads and relative prosperity, after which it was absorbed into Pakistan. The valley suffered badly during the militant insurgency of the late 2000s and the catastrophic floods of 2010, but it has recovered strongly and tourism has returned in large numbers.
The Butkara Stupa, a Buddhist monument dating back more than two thousand years, stands on the edge of the city, and the Swat Museum houses one of the finest collections of Gandharan sculpture anywhere, showing the remarkable blending of Greek and Indian artistic traditions. Rock carvings, ruined monasteries and the colossal seated Buddha of Jehanabad lie nearby. Fizagat Park beside the river is a favourite family spot, and the city serves as the departure point for Malam Jabba with its ski slopes, for the alpine valleys of Kalam, Bahrain and Ushu, and for the lakes and forests higher up.
Local culture is warmly hospitable, expressed in Pashto poetry, the rabab and drum music of the region, and the elaborate hospitality shown to guests. Trout from the mountain streams, chapli kebab, rice dishes and green tea are staples, and the bazaars sell shawls, tribal jewellery, honey and dried fruit. Malala Yousafzai, the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, was born and raised in Mingora, and her story is closely linked to the city's recent history.
A motorway now connects the valley with the main highway network, cutting travel time to Islamabad, and buses and vans serve the mountain roads. The University of Swat and several colleges are based locally.
Mingora is important as the gateway to one of the most beautiful and historically rich valleys in Pakistan.
