Minya

Minya stands on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, about two hundred and forty kilometres south of Cairo, at a point where the river valley widens between limestone cliffs on either side. The green strip of cultivation is broad here, and the surrounding desert plateaus are honeycombed with ancient tombs. The climate is hot and almost rainless, with very warm summers and mild, pleasant winters that make the months from November to March the best time to visit.

Around two hundred and fifty thousand people live in the city, which is the capital of Minya Governorate. It is often called the bride of Upper Egypt, a name earned by its riverside corniche, its gardens and the elegant mansions built during the cotton boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when European educated landowners commissioned villas in Italianate and art nouveau styles that still line some of its streets.

The economy rests on agriculture and its processing. Cotton, sugar cane, wheat and vegetables grow in the surrounding fields, and there are cotton gins, sugar refineries, cement works and quarries in the district. Minya also has one of the largest Coptic Christian populations of any Egyptian governorate, and churches and monasteries are a prominent part of the landscape alongside mosques.

The area around Minya is one of the richest archaeological regions in Egypt. At Beni Hasan, on the east bank, rock cut tombs of Middle Kingdom governors preserve wall paintings of extraordinary vividness, showing wrestling matches, craftsmen, hunting scenes and a famous procession of Asiatic visitors. Further south lies Tell el Amarna, the short lived capital founded by the pharaoh Akhenaten in the fourteenth century before Christ, where he and Nefertiti established the worship of the sun disc. The boundary stelae, the ruined palaces and the royal tomb make it one of the most evocative sites in the country, and the art of the Amarna period revolutionised Egyptian sculpture.

Nearby Hermopolis, sacred to the god Thoth, is marked by colossal baboon statues, and its necropolis at Tuna el Gebel contains the beautifully decorated tomb chapel of the priest Petosiris and vast catacombs where mummified ibises and baboons were buried in their millions. Zawyet el Maiyitin on the east bank is one of the largest cemeteries in the world, and Gebel el Teir above the river holds a monastery associated with the Holy Family's flight into Egypt, a major pilgrimage site.

Transport is by the railway and roads that run the length of the Nile valley, connecting Minya to Cairo in about four hours and to Asyut and Luxor to the south. River cruises occasionally call, and local ferries cross to the east bank.

Minya University, founded in the 1970s, is a large institution with faculties of medicine, engineering, agriculture and archaeology.

Minya is important as a governorate capital and agricultural centre, and it is valued by travellers as a quiet base for some of the least visited but most remarkable ancient sites in Egypt.
