Monaco

Monaco is a sovereign city-state and microstate on the French Riviera, bordered by France on three sides and by the Mediterranean Sea to the south. With a total area of approximately 2.02 square kilometers and a population of approximately 40,000, Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world by area (after Vatican City) and the most densely populated sovereign state on Earth. Despite — or perhaps because of — its extreme smallness, Monaco is one of the wealthiest and most internationally prominent states in the world, renowned for its luxury lifestyle, its famous Monte-Carlo Casino, the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix held through its streets, its royal family, and an extraordinary concentration of wealth that makes it simultaneously fascinating and unlike any other place on Earth.

Monaco has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297, when François Grimaldi disguised himself as a monk to capture the fortress that guards the Monaco Rock. Though the family was forced out several times over the subsequent centuries, they ultimately secured permanent control in 1419, and the Grimaldi dynasty has ruled Monaco ever since — one of the longest-reigning dynasties in European history. Monaco became a French protectorate in 1861 after the Treaty of Paris that established French sovereignty over much of the surrounding territory, and it has maintained a close but constitutionally independent relationship with France ever since. The current head of state, Prince Albert II, continues the family's centuries-long sovereignty.

The Prince's Palace (Palais Princier) on the Monaco Rock — the historic promontory that is the oldest part of the principality — is the official residence of the Grimaldi family and one of Monaco's principal tourist attractions. The changing of the guard ceremony held daily at the palace entrance is a well-attended spectacle. The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée, built in 1875 in a Romanesque-Byzantine style using white La Turbie stone, is the seat of the Archbishop of Monaco and contains the tombs of previous members of the Grimaldi dynasty, including Princess Grace (the American actress Grace Kelly, who married Prince Rainier III in 1956 in what was described as the wedding of the century).

The Oceanographic Museum (Musée Océanographique), founded by Prince Albert I in 1910 on the edge of the Monaco Rock, is one of the oldest and most important oceanographic institutions in the world. Built into the cliff face above the sea, it houses extensive aquariums, research facilities, and collections related to marine life and oceanography. Prince Albert I was a pioneering oceanographer who conducted numerous expeditions and contributed substantially to the scientific understanding of the world's oceans. The current Prince Albert II has maintained the family's commitment to environmental causes, with a particular focus on ocean conservation and climate change.

Monaco hosts approximately 35,000 millionaires and around 10,000 resident multimillionaires or billionaires, representing the highest concentration of wealthy individuals per capita anywhere in the world. The principality levies no income tax on residents (a policy introduced in 1869), which has long made it attractive to wealthy individuals from France and elsewhere. The luxury real estate market is the world's most expensive by price per square meter, and the harbor is permanently occupied by some of the largest private yachts in the world.

The Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, held on the streets of the principality in May, is one of the most prestigious events in motorsport — a race of extraordinary challenge through the narrowest street circuit in Formula 1, where overtaking is nearly impossible and the combination of speed, precision, and the surrounding glamour of the principality creates a spectacle unlike any other race in the calendar. Monte-Carlo Rally, the oldest rally car race in the world and the opening round of the World Rally Championship, is also held in and around Monaco each January. The Monte-Carlo Ballet and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra contribute a classical cultural dimension to the principality's entertainment profile.

Monaco is connected by rail to Nice and the French Riviera, and by the Monte-Carlo Heliport to Nice Airport. Its combination of extreme luxury, fascinating sovereignty, maritime heritage, sporting events, and Mediterranean setting makes it one of the world's most recognizable and most visited destinations, drawing over a million visitors each year to a space smaller than many large city parks.
