Mönchengladbach
Mönchengladbach lies on the Lower Rhine in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, roughly thirty kilometres west of Düsseldorf and close to the Dutch border. It stands on gently rolling ground between the Rhine and the Maas, in a landscape of heath, farmland and old market towns. The city is one of the larger urban centres in Germany's most populous state, with about two hundred and sixty thousand inhabitants.
The place takes its name from a Benedictine monastery founded in 974 on a wooded hill above the Niers valley. The Romanesque and Gothic Minster of Saint Vitus that grew from it still crowns the old town, and the medieval settlement of clerics and craftsmen below it formed the nucleus of the modern city. From the eighteenth century Mönchengladbach became a centre of spinning and weaving, so dominant that it was nicknamed the Rhenish Manchester. Textile fortunes built its villas, its parks and its technical schools. Heavy bombing in the Second World War destroyed much of the centre, and in 1975 the city merged with neighbouring Rheydt to form the municipality that exists today.
Its most celebrated building is the Abteiberg Museum, completed in 1982 to a design by the Austrian architect Hans Hollein. A landmark of postmodern architecture, it cascades down the abbey hill in a sequence of terraces, sawtooth roofs and silver-clad towers, and houses an outstanding collection of twentieth-century art including work by Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol and the Zero group. Schloss Rheydt, a superbly preserved Renaissance moated castle set in parkland, is the other essential sight, while the Bunter Garten, a landscaped park with a botanical garden and arboretum, provides the city's green heart.
Football shapes local identity more than anything else. Borussia Mönchengladbach, the club that dominated German football in the 1970s, plays at the Borussia-Park stadium before more than fifty thousand supporters, and match days transform the city. The Kaiser-Friedrich-Halle hosts concerts, the municipal theatre serves both former towns, and summer brings street festivals and the traditional funfair.
Textiles have given way to a broader economy of engineering, logistics, retail and services, and the city remains a centre for textile technology and fashion education through the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, whose design faculty is well regarded across Germany. A dense network of motorways, a busy railway station with fast connections to Cologne, Düsseldorf and the Netherlands, and the proximity of Düsseldorf Airport make the city easy to reach.
Cyclists appreciate the flat lanes of the Niers valley, and the Dutch cities of Roermond and Venlo are an easy day trip. Mönchengladbach rewards visitors who look past its rebuilt centre: a monastery hill, a radical museum, a Renaissance castle and one of the most passionate football cultures in Europe make it a distinctive stop on the Lower Rhine.
