Montes Claros

Montes Claros is the principal city of northern Minas Gerais, in the south-east of Brazil. It lies on a plateau roughly six hundred and fifty metres above sea level, in a transitional zone where the wooded savanna of the cerrado meets the drier caatinga scrubland of the Brazilian interior. Its name, meaning clear hills, refers to the pale open slopes that early travellers noticed in the surrounding countryside, and the landscape of low ranges and wide horizons still surrounds the city today.

With a population of around four hundred and twenty thousand, Montes Claros is by far the largest urban centre in a vast and sparsely populated region, serving as the commercial, medical and educational capital for a hinterland of well over a million people. Its economy combines cattle ranching, cotton and fruit farming with a surprisingly strong industrial base, including one of Brazil's most important concentrations of pharmaceutical manufacturing, along with textiles, cement and food processing. Tax incentives introduced in the 1960s to develop the country's poorer regions were decisive in attracting these industries.

The city traces its origins to a cattle ranch established in the early eighteenth century, when settlers pushed inland from Bahia in search of pasture and minerals. The village that grew around it was known as Formigas before being renamed and raised to town status in 1857. For most of its history it remained a modest sertão market town, but the arrival of the railway and later the north-south highway transformed it into a regional hub, and its population multiplied many times over during the twentieth century.

Montes Claros is best appreciated through its calendar rather than its monuments. The Festa de Agosto, held every August in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict, is one of the largest folk celebrations in Minas Gerais, with drumming groups, costumed dancers, processions and rituals that preserve strong Afro-Brazilian traditions. The Cathedral of Saint Joseph, the old market, the Parque Municipal Milton Prates and the regional museums provide the main urban landmarks, while Sapucaia mountain and the surrounding hills offer viewpoints over the city.

The countryside nearby is remarkable. The caves and rock paintings of Peruaçu National Park, the limestone cliffs of Serra do Cabral and the São Francisco River are all within reach, and the region's cuisine, based on cassava, corn, rapadura sugar and slow-cooked meats, reflects the traditions of the sertão. Local music, especially the accordion-driven styles of the interior, remains popular at street festivals.

Transport is a particular strength. Montes Claros sits on the BR-135 and BR-251 highways, has a regional airport with flights to Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Brasília, and is served by long-distance buses that make it the natural interchange for northern Minas. The State University of Montes Claros, known as Unimontes, together with federal and private institutions, draws thousands of students, and the city's hospitals treat patients from across a huge area.

Montes Claros matters as the engine of a region long considered remote, offering visitors vivid popular culture, dramatic landscapes nearby and a clear view of how interior Brazil has modernised.
