Montreux
Montreux is a lakeside town on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, sheltered by the Alps to the north and east and facing south over the lake towards France. Known as the Pearl of the Swiss Riviera for its exceptionally mild microclimate, its magnificent lakeside promenade lined with palm trees and flowers, and its world-famous jazz festival, Montreux is one of Switzerland's most elegant and internationally recognized resort towns.
With a population of approximately 26,000, Montreux is a small town that exercises global cultural influence far beyond its size, primarily through the Montreux Jazz Festival — founded in 1967 by Claude Nobs and recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Held each July for two weeks, the festival attracts world-class performers across jazz, blues, soul, funk, and pop, drawing around 250,000 visitors and featuring headline concerts at the Stravinski Auditorium and the Montreux Casino. The festival's extraordinary archive, including recordings of virtually every performance since its founding, is one of the most significant music archives in the world.
Montreux's connection to music is broader than the annual festival. The legendary Muscle Shoals rhythm section and Aretha Franklin recorded here; Deep Purple composed and recorded Smoke on the Water in Montreux after witnessing a fire at the Casino during a Frank Zappa concert in 1971 — an event commemorated by a bronze statue of Freddie Mercury on the lakefront promenade. The Queen frontman loved Montreux and spent much of his last years here, recording his final albums at the Mountain Studios in the town; his statue is one of the most visited landmarks in Switzerland.
The lakeside promenade (Quai des Fleurs) is Montreux's greatest public asset — a flower-lined pedestrian walkway extending along the shore with views of the lake, the Dents du Midi peaks, and the vineyards of the Lavaux UNESCO World Heritage wine region climbing the steep slopes above the town. The Château de Chillon, a medieval island fortress about three kilometers south of Montreux on a rocky promontory jutting into the lake, is one of the most visited historic monuments in Switzerland. Immortalized by Lord Byron in his poem The Prisoner of Chillon (1816), the castle's turreted silhouette reflected in the lake is one of the most photographed images in Switzerland.
The Lavaux vineyard terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching along the northern shore of Lake Geneva from Lausanne to Montreux, produce excellent white wines (particularly Chasselas) in a landscape of breathtaking beauty. The cogwheel railway of the Rochers-de-Naye, departing from Montreux station, climbs to 2,042 meters for panoramic views across the Alps and Lake Geneva.
Montreux is connected by the main Swiss rail network to Lausanne (about 20 minutes) and Geneva (about one hour). The Golden Pass scenic railway runs through to Gstaad, Interlaken, and eventually Lucerne. CGN lake steamers connect it to other Lake Geneva towns.
Montreux is a town of unusual cultural depth and natural splendor — a small community on a southern Alpine lake that has attracted artists, musicians, and writers for over two centuries and continues to do so with remarkable consistency.
