Morādābād

Morādābād is a major city in the Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh state in northern India, located on the banks of the Ram Ganga River. With a population exceeding 900,000, it is one of the most significant industrial and commercial cities in the Rohilkhand division of Uttar Pradesh. Morādābād lies approximately 167 kilometers northeast of the national capital, New Delhi, and is well connected to the broader North Indian economy.

The city was founded in the 17th century and named after Murad Baksh, the son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Under Mughal rule, the city developed as an administrative and trading center. It later fell under the influence of the Rohilla Afghans before coming under British control in the early 19th century. The colonial period saw Morādābād grow as a district headquarters and a center of craft production, particularly in the metalworking tradition that would come to define the city's global identity.

Morādābād is internationally recognized as the "Brass City" of India, thanks to its centuries-old tradition of brassware manufacturing. The city produces an extraordinary variety of brass and metal goods — including decorative bowls, vases, figurines, cutlery, furniture hardware, and artistically engraved items — that are exported to markets across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. The brassware industry, carried out in thousands of workshops ranging from small family operations to large factories, is the backbone of Morādābād's economy and employs a significant portion of its workforce.

The city has a number of notable landmarks, including the Jama Masjid, an impressive mosque dating from the Mughal era that is among the largest in the region. The Ram Ganga River provides a scenic backdrop and is an important cultural and religious feature for the city's population. The Moradabad Museum houses artifacts related to the region's history and the development of its craft traditions.

Morādābād is connected to Delhi and Lucknow by national highways and the Northern Railway network. The city falls on the Delhi-Moradabad-Lucknow rail corridor, making it accessible from both the national capital and Uttar Pradesh's state capital. Several educational institutions, including MJP Rohilkhand University located in nearby Bareilly, serve the region.

Morādābād's unique position as India's premier center of brassware craftsmanship and export, combined with its historical heritage and its role as a commercial hub in Uttar Pradesh, make it a city of considerable economic and cultural importance in northern India. Its artisans continue a metalworking tradition that has been admired and traded across the world for generations.
