Mwene
Mwene, usually written in full as Mwene-Ditu, is a city in the south central part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Lomami Province on the high savannah plateau that separates the Kasai and Lualaba river systems. It lies at around nine hundred metres above sea level in open grassland broken by gallery forest along the streams, roughly midway between the diamond city of Mbuji-Mayi to the north and the mining belt of Katanga to the south. The climate is tropical, with a long rainy season from September to May and a dry, dusty season in the middle of the year.
Estimates put the population somewhere between two and four hundred thousand, which makes Mwene-Ditu the largest urban centre in Lomami Province, larger than the provincial capital at Kabinda. It is above all a transport town, and its importance to the country comes from that role rather than from industry or administration.
The settlement grew in the first half of the twentieth century around a station on the railway built to carry copper and other minerals from Katanga towards the Kasai and eventually to the Atlantic. As the junction where the branch line towards Mbuji-Mayi leaves the main route, Mwene-Ditu became a place where goods were transferred, where railway workers settled and where traders gathered. Villages of Luba farmers merged into a growing town, and it was granted city status in the years after independence. Later decades brought hardship, as the decline of the national rail network, long distances from Kinshasa and the wider instability of the country left the city isolated for long periods.
Mwene-Ditu is not a tourist destination in the usual sense, and it has few formal monuments. Its interest lies in ordinary urban life: the sprawling central market where cassava flour, maize, palm oil, dried fish and imported goods change hands, the wide red earth streets, the churches that fill on Sunday mornings, and the railway yards that still define the shape of the town. The surrounding countryside offers wide horizons, rivers and small waterfalls, and villages where farming methods have changed little in generations.
The population is overwhelmingly Luba, and Tshiluba is the everyday language, with French used in schools, churches and administration. Congolese rumba and its faster descendants are heard everywhere, choirs are strong, and football is followed passionately. Small scale diamond digging in the wider region, alongside trade and farming of cassava, maize and groundnuts, underpins most household incomes.
Roads to Mbuji-Mayi and Kabinda are unpaved and difficult in the rains, so rail and light aircraft matter greatly. Primary and secondary schools are numerous, and several higher institutes offer teacher training and commercial studies.
Mwene-Ditu is significant as a regional crossroads, a market for a vast farming hinterland and a key link in the fragile transport network of central Congo.
