Mykolayiv is a city located in southern Ukraine, situated at the confluence of the Bug and Inhul rivers near the Black Sea coast, approximately 65 kilometers northeast of Odessa. The administrative center of Mykolayiv Oblast, the city has a population of approximately 475,000 people and has historically been one of Ukraine's most important industrial and shipbuilding centers. The zoo, also among the oldest in the country, is a popular destination for families.

The city gained international attention after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as Mykolayiv was subjected to intensive bombardment and was on the front lines of fighting in the southern theater of the war. The city's residents demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of devastating attacks, and the city became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in the south.
