Nanded
Nanded, also known as Nanded-Waghala, is a city located in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra state in central India. Situated on the banks of the Godavari River, it lies in a historically significant corridor that connects the Deccan plateau to the rest of the subcontinent. The city's landscape is characterized by the gently flowing Godavari, fertile agricultural plains, and the ancient ghats that line the riverbank, giving Nanded a timeless and spiritual atmosphere.
Nanded has a population of approximately 600,000 people and serves as the administrative headquarters of Nanded District. As a major urban center in the Marathwada sub-region, it plays an important role in the commerce, education, and governance of a wide rural hinterland. The city is well known across India and among Sikhs worldwide as a place of profound religious significance.
The history of Nanded stretches back many centuries, with the region having been part of various medieval kingdoms including the Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahmanis, and the Mughal Empire. However, the most transformative event in the city's modern history occurred in 1708, when Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and final human Guru of Sikhism, passed away in Nanded after being fatally wounded. This event elevated the city to the status of one of the holiest sites in Sikhism.
The Hazur Sahib Gurdwara, officially known as Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib, is the most important landmark in Nanded and one of the five Takhts, or seats of temporal authority, in Sikhism. It draws hundreds of thousands of Sikh pilgrims from India and around the world each year. The gurdwara is a magnificent structure adorned with golden domes and is accompanied by a sprawling complex of shrines, residences, and religious facilities. The Godavari River ghats and the Kandhar Fort, a medieval hilltop citadel, are also notable attractions in the wider area.
Nanded's cultural life is shaped by its diverse population of Marathi-speaking Hindus, Sikh pilgrims and residents, Muslims, and smaller communities from across India. The city hosts major religious festivals, including Gurpurab celebrations of extraordinary scale that transform Nanded into a center of global Sikh devotion. Marathwada folk traditions, classical music, and local arts also form an important part of the cultural fabric.
Nanded is connected by rail on the Hyderabad-Manmad railway line and has a domestic airport, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Airport, which provides flight connections to major Indian cities. State and private bus services connect the city to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, and other regional centers. An urban bus network serves local transportation needs.
Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, established in Nanded, is the primary higher education institution in the region, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines.
The economy of Nanded is based on agriculture, trade, religious tourism, and public sector employment. Cotton and soybean farming dominate the surrounding rural economy, while the city itself benefits significantly from the constant flow of pilgrims to Hazur Sahib.
Nanded's identity as a city of spiritual convergence, sitting at the crossroads of Sikh, Hindu, and Islamic traditions along the sacred Godavari River, makes it one of India's most meaningful and distinctive urban centers. Its global significance to the Sikh faith ensures its enduring relevance on the world stage.
