Narsingdi

Narsingdi lies about fifty kilometres north-east of Dhaka in central Bangladesh, on the flat and intensely fertile delta plain where the Shitalakshya, Meghna, Old Brahmaputra and Arial Kha rivers wind past one another. Water is everywhere in this landscape, and much of the district floods during the monsoon, leaving villages standing like islands above the fields. The town itself sits on slightly higher ground beside the river and has grown quickly as the influence of the capital has spread outwards.

Around two hundred and fifty thousand people live in the municipality, with well over two million in the district as a whole. Narsingdi is one of the great textile centres of Bangladesh. Thousands of power looms and handlooms operate in the surrounding villages, and the wholesale cloth market at Baburhat is among the largest in the country, drawing traders from every province to buy sarees, lungis, shirting and household fabrics. Agriculture is equally important, and the district is famous for its bananas, along with jackfruit, vegetables, sugarcane and rice.

The region has been settled for a very long time. Excavations at Wari-Bateshwar, a short distance from the town, have revealed a fortified urban settlement more than two thousand years old, with brick roads, monastery foundations, semi-precious stone beads and imported glass, suggesting an early trading city with connections reaching to Rome and Southeast Asia. The discovery reshaped understanding of ancient Bengal. The modern name is usually traced to a local ruler called Raja Narsingha. The area later formed part of the Mughal province of Bengal, then British India, and its handloom weaving traditions have been documented for centuries.

Visitors interested in archaeology head for Wari-Bateshwar and its small site museum. Other attractions include the Dream Holiday Park with its rides and gardens, the shrine and mosque complexes scattered through the district, the old zamindar houses, and boat trips on the Meghna, especially beautiful at sunset when fishing craft and cargo boats crowd the channel. Baburhat market itself is an experience, busiest on Sunday and Monday nights when bales of cloth are traded until dawn.

Daily life follows the rhythms of the rivers and the looms. Bengali culture is strong here, with poetry recitals, folk songs, boat races during the monsoon and the great festivals of Pohela Boishakh, Eid and Durga Puja. The cuisine centres on rice, freshwater fish curries, mustard oil, lentils and the sweet yoghurt and milk-based desserts of the region.

The Dhaka to Sylhet highway and the railway both pass through the town, so buses and trains to the capital are frequent, and river transport still carries goods. Narsingdi Government College, a science and technology university campus and numerous technical institutes serve local students.

Narsingdi is important as the textile heartland of Bangladesh and as the site of one of the oldest known urban settlements in the region.
