Nay Pyi Taw

Nay Pyi Taw is the capital city of Myanmar (formerly Burma), located in the Mandalay Division in the central part of the country, roughly equidistant between the former capitals of Yangon in the south and Mandalay in the north. With a population of approximately 1.1 million spread across an enormous administrative area of over 7,000 square kilometers, Nay Pyi Taw is one of the world's largest capital cities by area and has the unusual distinction of being one of the youngest national capitals, having been created and declared capital only in 2005.

The decision to build Nay Pyi Taw and relocate Myanmar's capital from Yangon was made by the military junta led by Senior General Than Shwe. The official reason given was to provide a more central location for the capital, but many observers have speculated about strategic military considerations — including vulnerability of the coastal Yangon to naval attack. The construction of the city began around 2002 in what had previously been largely jungle and paddy fields, and the capital was formally transferred on November 6, 2005. The city was built at enormous expense with broad highways, government ministries, luxury hotels, and an array of gleaming new structures.

Nay Pyi Taw has a distinctly unusual character compared to most world capitals. Its most striking feature is its empty grandeur — wide boulevards of 20 lanes with very little traffic, sprawling government complexes spread across vast distances, and hotel zones and shopping areas that can feel oddly deserted. The city was purpose-built for government functions rather than organic urban life, and its scale makes it challenging to navigate without a vehicle.

Among the city's landmarks is the Uppatasanti Pagoda, a replica of the famous Shwedagon Pagoda of Yangon, built to nearly identical dimensions but using white marble. The pagoda is a significant Buddhist shrine and an important symbol of Myanmar's religious identity. The National Museum of Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw houses historical artifacts and exhibits related to the history and culture of the country. The Naypyidaw Zoological Gardens and the Water Fountain Garden are popular recreational sites.

The Myanmar Gems Museum displays the country's extraordinary gem resources, particularly rubies and jade, which have been an important part of Myanmar's natural wealth for centuries. The National Museum and the Gems Museum together provide informative windows into Myanmar's cultural and natural heritage.

The city is served by Naypyidaw International Airport and is connected by highway and rail to Yangon and Mandalay. As Myanmar's administrative capital, Nay Pyi Taw houses all major government ministries, the parliament building, the Supreme Court, and the official residences of the President and other senior officials. Despite the political turmoil that has gripped Myanmar since the military coup of February 2021, Nay Pyi Taw remains the formal seat of the country's government and an extraordinary example of a 21st-century planned capital city.
