Newport, known in Welsh as Casnewydd, stands in southeast Wales where the River Usk winds down to the Severn Estuary. The tidal range here is among the greatest in the world, so the river swings between broad brown mudflats and a full channel twice a day. Wooded hills rise to the north and west, while low wetlands and reclaimed levels stretch along the coast.

With around one hundred and sixty thousand residents, Newport is the third largest urban centre in Wales after Cardiff and Swansea, and it gained formal city status in 2002. Its position at the junction of the main road and rail routes between England and South Wales has made it a commercial and industrial gateway for centuries.

The Romans were the first to build here on a large scale, establishing the legionary fortress of Isca at nearby Caerleon, where an amphitheatre, barracks and bath complex can still be visited and rank among the finest Roman remains in Britain. A Norman castle later guarded the river crossing, and its ruins survive beside the modern bridge. The town grew slowly until the nineteenth century, when coal and iron from the valleys turned it into one of the busiest ports in the world. Newport also holds a decisive place in British political history, for in 1839 thousands of Chartists marched into the town demanding the vote and were met with gunfire outside the Westgate Hotel, an event still commemorated as the last large scale armed rising in Britain.

The most striking landmark is the Transporter Bridge, opened in 1906 and one of only a handful still working anywhere in the world, carrying a suspended gondola across the river beneath a soaring lattice frame. Tredegar House, a magnificent red brick mansion of the seventeenth century set in parkland, tells the story of the Morgan family who shaped the region. The city also cares for a remarkable medieval ship, uncovered in the riverbank mud in 2002 and now being conserved as the best preserved vessel of its age found in Britain. St Woolos Cathedral, with Norman arches at its core, crowns the hill above the centre.

Newport Wetlands, on the estuary edge, is a haven for waders and wintering birds and a favourite place for walks. The Riverfront theatre and gallery, an arts centre in the old market quarter and a lively music history that produced several well known bands add to cultural life. Just outside the city, the Celtic Manor Resort has hosted the Ryder Cup and an international summit.

Two motorway crossings of the Severn place Bristol within half an hour, and fast trains reach London in less than two hours. Local buses and a compact walkable centre serve daily needs, and a campus of the University of South Wales sits beside the river.
