Current Time in Nizāmābād, India

Nizāmābād stands on the Deccan plateau in the northern part of the Indian state of Telangana, roughly one hundred and seventy kilometres from Hyderabad. The countryside around it is gently undulating, with black cotton soil, rocky outcrops and the broad valley of the Godavari river to the north, while the Manjira flows past to the west. The climate is hot and dry for much of the year, broken by a monsoon that turns the fields a brilliant green from June onward.

The city has a population of around three hundred and twenty thousand and is the headquarters of a large agricultural district. It is one of the most important market towns in Telangana, particularly for turmeric, and its trading yards handle some of the largest volumes of that spice in India, alongside maize, rice, sugarcane and soybeans. Farmers from across the region bring their crops here, and the rhythms of the harvest set the pace of local life.

The place was known for centuries as Indur, a name still used affectionately, and it appears in records from the era of the Rashtrakuta dynasty more than a thousand years ago. Later it passed to the Kakatiyas, the Bahmani sultans and the Qutb Shahis, and eventually became part of the princely state of Hyderabad ruled by the Nizams, from whom the modern name derives. The Nizams left a lasting mark on the district, above all through the great Nizam Sagar dam completed in the 1930s across the Manjira, a work of engineering that irrigated a vast area and is still admired for its long arcaded wall.

Within the city, the hilltop fort built during medieval times offers wide views over the surrounding plain and contains a temple and old gateways. The Neelakanteshwara temple, dedicated to Shiva, is among the oldest religious sites in the area, and the Sri Rama temple, Kanteshwar and several mosques and dargahs reflect a mixed cultural heritage. Ashok Sagar lake, with an island statue of the goddess Saraswati, and the wooded reservoir at Alisagar are popular for picnics and boating.

The district's most visited destination is Basar, on the banks of the Godavari, where the Gnana Saraswati temple draws families from across southern India for the ceremony in which young children write their first letters. Domakonda Fort, with its restored palace, and the Sri Ram Sagar reservoir are other regional attractions.

Cultural life follows the Telangana calendar, with the flower festival of Bathukamma, the Bonalu celebrations and colourful village fairs. Telangana University, based nearby at Dichpally, along with engineering, medical and agricultural colleges, serves students from the northern districts.

Railways link Nizāmābād toward Hyderabad, Nanded and the Maharashtra border, national highways cross the district, and buses connect every town and village.

Nizāmābād is important as a spice trading centre, a hub for irrigation and agriculture, and a city with deep roots in the history of the Deccan.
