Noida
Noida lies immediately southeast of Delhi in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, occupying the flat land between the Yamuna and Hindon rivers. Although administratively separate, it functions as an integral part of the National Capital Region and is joined to the capital by bridges, expressways and metro lines. The climate is that of the northern plains, with fierce summer heat, a humid monsoon and short, cool winters.
The name is an acronym of the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority, the body that founded the city on the seventeenth of April 1976. The plan divided the area into numbered sectors served by wide roads and generous green belts, and this orderly layout, together with an unusually high proportion of tree cover, still distinguishes Noida from much of the surrounding region. The population of the city proper is well over half a million and the wider urban area considerably larger.
Noida is one of the leading business centres of northern India. It hosts a dense concentration of information technology and business process companies, engineering firms and one of the largest mobile telephone manufacturing plants in the world. Almost every major Indian television news channel maintains studios in the city, and Film City in Sector 16 has made Noida the broadcasting capital of the country. Corporate towers, coworking spaces and start ups cluster along the expressway sectors.
Attractions are modern rather than ancient. The Great India Place and other large shopping centres draw visitors from across the region, and the adjoining Worlds of Wonder amusement and water park is a popular family destination. The Noida Botanical Garden, the sprawling Sector 91 city park and the Okhla Bird Sanctuary on the Yamuna, where hundreds of species can be seen in winter, provide green relief. The Shaheed Smarak and the striking spiral of the Noida Sector 137 area contrast with the grand scale of nearby Delhi monuments, which are less than an hour away.
Transport is a particular strength. The Delhi Metro Blue and Magenta lines serve the city, the driverless Aqua Line runs south to Greater Noida, and the Delhi Noida Direct flyway and the Noida Greater Noida Expressway carry heavy commuter traffic. The forthcoming international airport at Jewar will add another dimension, while Indira Gandhi International Airport is currently about an hour away.
Several private universities and institutes are based here, including Amity University, the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology and a range of law, design and management schools, alongside branch campuses and research centres.
Daily life in Noida is cosmopolitan by Indian standards, with residents drawn from every state, a wide choice of restaurants, cricket at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex and an active calendar of cultural events. The city matters as a model of planned industrial development that grew into a major technology and media hub, offering a calmer and greener alternative to living in Delhi itself.
