Ohrid

Ohrid is a historic city in southwestern North Macedonia, situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes. Often called the Jerusalem of the Balkans, Ohrid is a place of exceptional natural beauty and profound cultural and religious significance, recognized by UNESCO as both a World Heritage Site for its natural and cultural values.

The city has a population of approximately 50,000 people and serves as the administrative center of the Ohrid Municipality. It is one of the most important tourist destinations in North Macedonia, attracting visitors drawn by its medieval architecture, crystal-clear lake waters, and rich Orthodox Christian heritage. Lake Ohrid itself is estimated to be around three million years old and is home to numerous endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.

Ohrid's history stretches back to antiquity. It was an important settlement during the Roman era and became a major religious and cultural center during the First Bulgarian Empire in the 9th century. Saints Clement and Naum, disciples of Cyril and Methodius, established a literary school here that spread the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets throughout the Slavic world. The Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon, built over early Christian foundations, stands as a testament to this enduring legacy.

The old town of Ohrid is a remarkably preserved medieval quarter perched above the lake. Its cobblestone streets wind past Byzantine churches, Ottoman-era houses, and ancient ruins. The Church of Saint John at Kaneo, dramatically positioned on a cliff above the lake, is one of the most photographed sights in the Balkans. The ancient theater, dating from the Hellenistic period, is still used for performances during the Ohrid Summer Festival held each year from June to August.

The Ohrid Summer Festival is one of the most prestigious cultural events in the region, featuring opera, classical music, theater, and folklore performances set against the backdrop of the lake and medieval architecture. The city's museums, including the Icon Gallery and the National Museum, hold remarkable collections of Byzantine icons and artifacts that document centuries of artistic and religious life.

Lake Ohrid offers swimming, kayaking, fishing, and boat trips to the Monastery of Saint Naum near the Albanian border. The lake's beaches and clear waters make it a popular summer retreat for both locals and regional tourists. The Galichica National Park, stretching between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, provides hiking and wildlife-watching opportunities.

Ohrid is served by Ohrid International Airport, which handles seasonal flights from across Europe. Road connections link the city to Skopje, the national capital, and to neighboring Albania. The city's blend of antiquity, natural splendor, and living tradition makes it one of the most rewarding small cities to visit in southeastern Europe.
